Review: Enemy Mind - No Safe Space

Enemy Mind is a name that ring bells in beatdown circles. The band released their self-titled debut in 2009, followed the same year by split with Line Of Scrimmage, but has been mostly silent since. So this new album can come as surprise cause many believed the band is long dead and gone. They’re not and this new record on BDWH is a proof. They always were on the heavier vibe but with these new tracks the band got heavy as shit with death metal influences all over. Not to say the core element is gone. Despite all that metal stuff you can hear where they come from and there are some hints of Hatebreed, Bulldoze or Built Upon Frustration breaking through from underneath the surface.

No Safe Place is not a bad record but it’s not like after first listen I couldn’t wait to tell people about it. The thing is that, I’m not so crazy about death metal, I can barely sit through entire Morbid Angel record. I can’ even tell you how this one compares to current standards for death metal. There were times when listening to this album I thought to myself I’d rather be listening to Madball.

The title is a play on sensitive college kids and if you’re offended that’s your problem. The band is from Pittsburgh and they don’t have safe spaces over there.

Overall, the album doesn’t do much to differentiate itself from the other metallic beatdown bands we’ve heard countless times before in recent years, but if you enjoy hadcore of that style, then it’s worth checking out.

Full stream: Hardside - The Madness

Timebomb track was a blast, but now when the entire album is up on bandcamp and all I can say is the The Madness provides real shit. Listen to the title track or Till My Blood Runs Dry and tell me that shit doesn’t knock. The riffing is better than usual and the drums are heavy and technical, delivering sheer force without losing precision. The album devotes a fair amount of time to more creative angle, somehow it never disrupts the flow of what is the essence of hardcore, which is creating music that gives your girlfriend a mental breakdown. The lyrics are bleak and negative, dealing with hardships and depression. If your live is filled with that type of shit you can easily relate. I do.

A week from now, July 30, this gem will hit the streets. To secure your copy you can place your pre-order here.

Video: Hardside - Timebomb

This Texas crew has been turning a lot of heads since their debut ep Welcome To Hell. Heavy, rough sounding hardcore fronted by gritty as the gravel vocals that could make likes of Merauder or Hatebreed proud, while puting their own twist on the proven formula with an occasional use of clean vocals. Usually my reaction would be 'what the fuck?', but somehow they pull it off. Seriously. No way it makes them look soft. In contrary, it only makes the hard parts sound harder and overall gives the music more depth than your average band in this weight category.

This new cut is a fucking monster, with band going at it real hardcore. The track comes with a tight groove and great riffing that gives it lots of dynamics, somewhere in the middle the fast part is straight up head-banging thrash and it all ends with a killer mosh part. It sounds like they really wanted to tap into new territories while maintaining that raw hardcore edge. All with a great effect. The new record will drop end of July, 'The Madness', BDHW Recs.

Fallbrawl - Pure Mayhem

Hate it or love it, Fallbrawl is as German beatdown as it gets. Guys from over there had always their own take on this genre which emphasized heaviness over everything else. Cannot say I am the biggest fan, but I don’t mind couple of bands of this style. In recent years Fallbrawl has emerged as the leading posse doing this shit and basically a band to go to when you feel the urge for that type of sound.

The Last Charge to release new full length, Straight Outta Nowhere

The Last Charge has teamed up with BDHW Recs for a "Straight Outta Nowhere" full length release. The album should drop in September, but pre-orders packages are already available here. Check out the promo track, 'Under The Gun', here. This is band's first release in 5 years, and will bring 11 tracks of bone-crushing beatdown the band is known for!

.45 Stainles - OGBD

The band hails from Turku, Finland, and since starting out in 2009 they’ve had a goal of playing the heaviest beatdown music possible. They don’t hide their influences, mentioning bands like Shattered Realm or Bulldoze as their biggest inspiration, but .45 Stainless they deliver that kind of aggression?

The album starts with a short intro which sounds like 15-minutes of heavy Fruity Loops engineering but when finally drums and guitars jump in it’s not that bad actually. Dual vocals get definitely the job done, guitars sound heavy and strong while the rhythm section lays down some tight grooves. Nothing ultra fast here, but the pace and tone pick up surprisingly often for that type of music. Two first songs after the intro, Endless and Hated, are probably the best on the album. The vocals deliver strong attitude and the tight performance by the band shows off their skills to create some memorable moments. Orighetto State Of Mind starts with a massive mid-tempo passage, but the energy somehow gets lost as the song progresses. The same goes for Wardrumz, the song got some powerful build up at the beginning and then progresses into some mediocre NYC-flavored hardcore. The tempo kicks up during the last song, At War, which delivers more bite with strong vocal performance while the rest of the band provides a solid and tight background.

The album surprisingly is better that I initially thought and after couple of spins I start to appreciate what they do here. I wouldn’t say it is spine chilling experience or anything ground breaking, but I doubt they had such aspirations anyway. All in all, I don’t care that it’s predictable, generic and there is rarely anything that would make you mosh around your room. Very often experimenting with its sound is the worst thing a hardcore band can do. Consciously or not, the band has definitely not fallen in this trap. My biggest gripe with this album however is that the band’s attitude is not entirely convincing. From the band’s name, to the lyrics and sound samples of gunshots between the songs, it’s all to much gangsta for my taste. Is living in Turku really that hard? On the other hand, it might be a joke, a gimmick, but if it is, it ain’t funny.

World Of Pain - World Of Pain

Not much time has passed since the bone-crushing three-way split with Xibalba and Ruckus, and the debut full length from World Of Pain album drops at BDHW Records. I’ve been following the band since their first demo and it’s good to see them getting the attention they deserve. This self titled album is a logical continuation of what they did on their previous releases.

It begins with a heavy-ass intro to get the mood started which provides a good build up to the Running Thin, the opening track, which is rather fast paced compared to some other parts of the album with massive riffs and menacing low-pitched vocals that sounds almost death metal. The rest of the tracks on the album continue in similar fashion bringing a great balance between groove and heaviness. Not that the band can’t hold it down on their own, but somehow the tracks with guest appearances are the ones I like the best on the album. Third Rail has insane flow with Noah, vocalist of World Of Pain, trading verses with no one else but Gonzales of Billy Club Sandwich. This collaboration was bound to be a success and the result is nothing but dope. The other memorable moment is Consequence with guest appearance from Tad of Stout fame. His sinister vocals definitely have a uniqueness to them that help this song to sound truly sinister and evil.

Overall, World Of Pain definitely brings the in-your-face aggression, but there’s also a lot of substance in what the they do. The album on a whole sounds really cohesive, they build on what they do best but aren’t afraid to explore new territories as well. Highly recommended stuff.
