Demo Daze: Spirit Crusher - Demo 2015

Spirit Crusher outta Germany take their inspiration from NYHC, the 90s and the Straight Edge. This combination is a huge promise, but thankfully they didn't fuck it up. Vibed out hardcore with a slick riffing and sweet, intense groove, and on top of that you get vocals that really try hard to sound like classic NYC bands. If I could point any European reference, I'd say Icepick and True Blue. There are bits and pieces that could be improved, but overall that demo shows potential. I know this type of sound is THE SHIT nowadays, so I guess many of you will dig it.

You can cop it on tape here.

Review: Reality Returns - Reality Returns 7"

Reality Returns - Reality Returns (Take It Back Records) - Reality Returns was formed by dudes from Teamkiller and Coldburn who wanted to play more traditional, in your face brand of hardcore. Don’t expect the band to break new grounds on this record, but they do a good job of recreating the sound of classic Merauder, Madball or Killing Time tunes.

The group comes correct with their fresh yet aggressive style and the short ep overflows with that distinct style of 90’s heavy hardcore. The record kicks off with a groove-ridden intro with the whole crew shouting Reality Returns on repeat, classy! What follows next is 3 tracks of fast, hard-hitting hardcore that have been done many times before, but who cares when it sounds so good! They throw in some heavier parts at times too, but it never goes too much into metal direction which is always cool in my book. Check out this well crafted and catchy.ep whenever you have a chance.

Ryker's - Hard To The Core video

Just over the last couple of days there's been more updates about new Ryker's album, and all of a sudden the band drops the clip for title track from the upcoming record. The track itself does not dissapoint if you're a fan of their earlir work. What can I say, this is Euro-core in all its glory.

Coldburn - D.T.E. / Love Left Me

Pretty rad track from Coldburn.

Review: Go For It! - Misanthropy

This is the latest album by Go For It!, a band that made some pretty decent tunes on its previous records but these new songs left me with mixed feelings. Misantrophy is definitely not bad, but something's missing. It might be because I am basically into more straight-to-the-point type of shit. What I look for in hardcore is rawness and aggression, and I never really cared for melodic core, emo or any of that crap. Old school or new school, it has to hit hard. In case of Misantrophy, it just sounds too polished to me. I think the album would definitely benefit from rawer production.

Review: Bravestar - Surrounded By Vultures

Just like on the previous albums, on Surrounded By Vultures Bravestar plays quite straight forward hardcore full of sing-along parts and breakdowns. It’s still aggressive, in-your-face hardcore and the band still relies heavily on thrash-inspired riffs, bumped up tempos, thick bass and intensive drum work but has also tried couple of new tricks to prevent things from getting boring. This basically means the songs got more complex with more variance in tempos and some metallic elements or even hard rock parts thrown in.

Review: Got Nuthin´- Back On The Streets

This 4-song MCD is apparently a debut release from this Berlin-based band with members from Tonedown, All For Revenge and Denny Crane. The idea behind Got Nothin’ is that these dudes wanted to make some more traditional hardcore music than what they do with their other bands. So they got together to write couple fast songs, tested them live and when the crowds’ reaction turned out to be positive, the natural thing was to follow up with a proper release. That’s how this ep came to being. The band plays old school hardcore that’s heavily indebted to the NYHC sound, but it also got ‘European hardcore’ written all over it.

New Blood: Seconds Of Peace

Seconds Of Peace is a new band from Germany which really impressed me with their debut demo they dropped not so long ago. Those five tracks displayed just the right balance of different influences ranging from classic NYHC to crossover sound, and everything was delivered with force and conviction. So, check out the interview I did with the band lately where they talk about the origins, influences and idea behind the band and some more stories.

Review: Calvaria Fuck Fever - Cause Of Chaos

Cause Of Chaos is the band’s first full length and brings some seriously heavy down-tuned metallic hardcore. Thankfully, this is not the type of deathcore with silly haircuts and crab-like moves, but still death metal elements are pretty strong on this one. Most of the time the songs go slow with a combination of slamming guitars and growling vocals, but this style simultaneously works for and against the band.

Review: Drowning In Preconception - What’s Wrong?

If you want some in your face hardcore without too much distraction Drowning In Preconception is happy to provide that. The self-released debut ep ‘What’s Wrong?’ contains 5 songs of straight up heavy hardcore that takes cues from bands like Terror, Since The Flood or old Hatebreed. With their heavy ass guitar riffs and drummer that like to double bass the shit of each breakdown, you kind of know what to expect. And that is not a bad thing in my book. Although the album does not blow me away by any means, it’s still a solid listen.

Dogchains - Demo 2012

Just a quick look at band's name and the cover of their first demo tells me we're dealing with something every hardcore connoisseur will appreciate. Dogchains is from Germany and is down with straight edge lifestyle. The music has a classic NYHC vibe to it, with some melodies in the guitar parts and strong groove laid down by the rhythm section. I can image the band causes some serious pit damage during the breakdown parts! The demo quality is top notch and you can hear all the instruments clearly. Definitely worth checking out! Download it!

New Blood: Scarred Mind

Germany’s Scarred Mind has just recently released Heavy Mental ep which is sure to make all the fans of heavy hardcore happy. The band takes a lot of correct NYHC influences to create some massive sound. Everything is pretty much in place, from thrash-infused groove parts to vicious breakdowns. Aggressive but well thought out music with the right attitude. The guys were kind enough to answer couple of my questions so check it out!

On The Run - Demo

On The Run hails from Mönchengladbach, Germany and this is their first demo. It's 6 tracks including intro of hardcore that's somewhere between NYHC and more melodic sound. The songs are pretty tight and the band made sure there is some diversity and hook to each song. It's not as in your face and aggressive as some other band out there, but still is an enjoyable listen. Download it!
