Irish Voodoo set off pre-orders for Desensitized , CodeXred and KDC

crjacketproofmcw-11-150x150Irish Voodoo Records has launched pre-orders for new seven inches from CodeXred, KDC, and Desensitized. Each release comes with different set of colors and with CD which contains all the songs.

Desensitized

2011 finds Desensitized well-poised to capitalize on the lack of young, fast, pissed-off NYHC bands who actually call NYC home. Already planning their first Midwest tour, they show no signs of slowing down. Their 2010 demo was released as a limited-run cassette tape by Section 8 Records (based in Cape Cod), which quickly sold out of the original pressing. A 2nd pressing was commissioned, and shortly thereafter, the band was contacted by Southern California’s Irish Voodoo Records, who agreed to release Desensitized’s first 7-inch record in the fall of 2011.

CodeXRed

CodexRed is a straight edge hardcore band coming out of Reno, Nevada. CodexRed is Alex Haller – Vocals, Adam Farnsworth – Bass, Adam Chism – Guitar, Brian Bernard – Guitar, and Brian Vega- Drums. Starting about 2 years ago with a slightly different line up, but with the same goals, play a lot of shows, have a lot of fun, and get out of town as often as possible. In the Summer of 2010 CodexRed recorded a 4 song demo that has received a lot of positive feedback and they are anticipating the release of 5 new song 7″ vinyl in 2012.

KDC

KDC was formed in 2005 in Yauco, Puerto Rico. After a number of demos, local shows, and line up changes throughout 2006 and 2007, they went to record Epidemic Ambition, which was released on Southground Records in 2008. KDC toured the east coast of the United States in the summer of 2009 and in the summer of 2010. After coming back from tour, KDC went on to record a seven song EP called “Good Mourning” which was self released in October 2010. After releasing their EP, Casper and Juanki decided to leave Puerto Rico and continue KDC in Buffalo, NY to be able to tour and make music freely and more consistently. While in Buffalo, KDC recorded a three song demo and added two new members from the local area. KDC creates raw, emotional and passionate music that strives not to fall in into any typical genre. ”I was handed a demo of KDC and was hooked the first time Heard this music come out of my speakers” ” One of the best demos of 2010″ Joey VooDoo.

Brawl Interview

Brawl is Boise, Idaho-based band which delivers some straight up in-your-face hardcore with a nice NYHC touch. The band has been around for some time already and their dedication has seem to earn them a household name status amongst the local scene. Brawl has released its debut ep ‘The Bitter End’ all by themselves in 2010, which was quickly followed by a split with Black Cloud in 2011, also self released. And the band is not slowing down at all. While the new ‘Punishment’ is already available at Westcoast Worldwide and Irish Voodoo Records, the ‘Back Biter’ is expected to drop just by the end of this year.

First of all, congratulations with the upcoming seven inch, Punishment. Could you tell us something about the release? What can we look out for?
Thank you we are happy to have it released by two labels. Irish Voodoo Records for the 7" Vinyl with two cover options and Westcoast Worldwide Records for the CD/Digital formats. Our presale of the Test Press and bundles sold out so we couldn't be happier.

Having heard couple of new tracks at your facebook profile I must admit this shit sounds hard! What is the driving force behind your music?
We are a heavy Hardcore band. We have many influences and take a strong approach musically and lyrically to our friends, scene, politics, government, war, religion, environment, and shitty people. We spit out aggressive, no sugar coated, direct in your face lyrics.

Have you had a chance to perform those songs live? What type of response have you been getting?
We have had a chance to perform them and the response is great for us. No matter what we will play anywhere and we will always have a DIY approach to shows. We are doing a mini tour with MDK starting March 8th and we will be playing the 5 songs off Punishment plus 3 brand new songs that we are super stoked to finally play live.

How important are lyrics for the band? Did you have any specific topics in mind when you wrote lyrics for the ep?
Lyrics are important but we are not a poetic hardcore band. They are pretty self explanatory but we hit on many topics from protecting our rights, freedoms, free speech, way of life, weak ass friends who fuck over people they call friends, environmental depletion, solid friends and crew. We don't really have topics that are off limits.

How did you hook up with Westcoast Worldwide and Irish Voodoo Records for the release?
We were talking to Joey from IVR about doing a 7". Then we went on a mini tour on on the West Coast and recorded at Pitbull Farm with Pitbull Dan (Murder Death Kill, Blood Stands Still, Donnybrook). We played a show in SoCal with Terror and Alpha & Omega and he came to the show to meet us in person and here we are. Westcoast Worldwide hit us up soon after and fortunately they were cool with a dual label release. Both labels are great for us. They get it.

No doubt vinyl holds a special place in the hardcore culture. How is it important for you to have your music released on this format?
We will not do a release with any label that doesn't do vinyl or at least let IVR put out the vinyl version. It is a great newer label and we are dedicated to their growth. We are not a band in debt. We own all our stuff. This is not an option.

The ep is going to be officially available in couple of days from now and then you are going to hit the road for bunch of shows with Murder Death Kill. What is it that keeps you excited and motivated about being in band and moving forward?
We love playing shows, booking Hardcore bands in Idaho, writing music, and we have all been in it for a long time. It is a way of life for us. It is who we are when we go about our day to day lives. Touring is the best when you are prepared. Meeting new kids and bands in different cities never gets old.

How do you manage to balance involvement in the band with family and day job commitments?
Well that is something we have worked on for years. We have set ourselves up in business or work to where we can make money at home while on the road. We all own businesses or work jobs during the week. We take time off when we want. We practice 3 nights a week. We spend lots of time with family and friends. They support us and understand that it is as much a part of our lives as they are. However, nothing is more important than family.

What are some other hardcore bands in your area we should follow?
Idaho is really lacking in music. Always has been. That being said we have some really good bands out of here. Not all Hardcore but we can all do shows together. Compromised, Black Cloud, Bone Dance, Gernika, Sinews, Reverie, N.F.F.U., and Hummingbird of Death are some of the best bands in town.

Before we wrap up, tell us something about Boise? Apart from right wing militias, what’s to see over there?
Boise is a family town. Very Mormon here. I am not from here but it is a great place to raise a family for the most part. The militia's don't exist here anymore. Racist extremist were all were ran out. The police force is still bullshit though and this is the drunkest city in the west so congratulations Boise.

Brawl to drop new album via Westcoast Worldwide. 7" to be released by Irish Voodoo

Westcoast Worldwide Records has recently announced the signing of Boise, Idaho-based Brawl. The band recently completed its latest offering, “Punishment” at Pittbull Farms in Victorville, California with producer/engineer “Pitbull” Dan Banura (Murder Death Kill, Blood Stands Still, Donnybrook). The New album is set to drop March 6th, 2012. Irish Voodoo Records will handle 7″ duties for the release.

“We couldn’t be more excited to join the WCWW family” states vocalist Eric Muniz. A lot of what we are about is old school ethics, hardcore pride, and hard work. Westcoast is totally about that too. It seems to be a great fit and we couldn’t be more in to it”.

“We love Brawls old school approach to hardcore”, comments Westcoast Worldwide founder Mikey Hood. “Friends, family, good times, and hardcore. That for us is really what it’s all about. These guys are rad. We love bands that play, and book tons of shows, and open venues, and really keep their scenes going. As for the sound, If you like bands like Death Before Dishonor, Propain, North Side Kings, or Breakdown you will love Brawl.”

Founded in 2010, Brawl has been pummeling the Northwest with two DIY releases under their belts, in addition to several tours. “Being a hardcore band from Boise is tough”, says Muniz. “There wasn’t a ton of opportunities for a band like us, so we had to make our own. We’re just four guys that really love this music and this scene, and we feel very fortunate that we get to play it, book it, be so involved in it, and enjoy it so much. Not only in our home state, but in other places as well. This really is our way of life.”

“Punishment” by Brawl will be available March 6th, 2012 on Westcoast Worldwide Records

Irish Voodoo Records interview

Irish Voodoo Records is a DIY label out of Southern California with bands like Ruined Tongue, Results, Birth And Burial, Colors and many more. They're pretty busy right now, with new releases in the pipeline and distro full of hardcore goodness. Here's an interview with the guys behind the Irish Voodoo who drop some knowledge on what is it like to run a label, future plans and more.
How did Irish Voodoo Records come about? What encouraged you to set it up and how long was it gestating before taking flight?

I never wanted to start a label, at the time i was in a band called A Witch's Distance, after we recorded and released a demo, we were back in the studio again to record new songs to shop around, but as a band, we decided to self release it. I had no funds to start a label, no name for the label, no logo, just had nothing.

And the label name, where did that come from?

So around 2004, I was thinking, if we are going to self release it, I want it under a name, so since I'm Irish, I said IRISH VOODOO RECORDS. At the time, and even now, I think it sounds good. I was into lots of punk style music or underground, so I didn't want a name to sound like a hardcore label, or just be a hardcore label, cause I'm into metal, post hardcore,or some form of punk. So the first release was the A Witch's Distance CD, It didn't have a logo or release number, cause I wasn't sure yet about doing a label.

You have quite a few cool bands lined up for the label now, like Results, Decisions, All Your Might or Birth And Burial among others. What plays into your decision when choosing which bands to work with?

Results changed to Worlds Below, great songs, great band, pick up the new 7" lol nice plug, anyways when my band was playing shows, I would see other bands on the bill with us. I would say, they are cool, they should have a release out, but lots of the bands are young kids and don't have the money to make a demo, let alone self release a cd or vinyl. So I started setting up DIY shows, at any place that would let me, with bands i liked, that we played with to make a relationship with them and to get to know them better. That's when I decided to start this label and release music, in my opinion, should be heard.

Based on your experience of running a label, what advice would you give to someone interested in doing the same thing? How to go about finding new bands, promoting early releases etc.?

Well if your serious about doing a label, do it for fun. I love hardcore, If i wanted to make money, I wouldn't do hardcore/punk/metal label. I don't make money, my goal is to make my money back for future releases and merch. I still go to shows, so sometimes i see band, and keep tabs on them from the bands myspace, twitter, or facebook, that way i can see if they are serious and play lots of shows and tour. I still get demos in the mail, and I listen to all of them, a little fact, the bands Shadows and Ruined Tongue are two bands on the label that emailed me or sent in a demo to check them out. So bands, email me too, or send me music, it never goes to the trash, I listen and keep everything. As far for promoting, I don't do big adds in magazines, so the bands playing as much as they can and touring is the best way to promote a release. I wont lie, Myspace helped with sales in the beginning, I still use Myspace, but Facebook and twitter is better, or online fanzines.

Has running a label, which obviously gives a lot of satisfaction but also means dealing with some bullshit as well, changed a way you look at hardcore scene in any way?

Well I'm a little guy, DIY all the way, so I don't deal with as much bullshit as bigger labels, but I'm a positive kind of guy, so I can look pass the bullshit. I have been involved in hardcore since 84, I'm 38 now. I hate saying "back in the day", but it's hard sometimes. I just change with the times.

What’s the biggest mistake to avoid when running a label?

That's a good question, I am too nice sometimes, I hear it all from bands, for example, "we want to tour and make this full time" "We have big things coming up" I did that once, and spent lots of money on a band, and they break up week after the release, so its a learning process for sure. Don't just jump on every band, keep tabs on them, to make sure they will work hard for you, as you will work hard for them.

You must be getting a lot of submissions from the new hardcore bands. What in your opinion is the state of hardcore music nowadays?

I love it, I get lots of submissions from good bands, just sometimes I don't have the funds, or I would release a record for every band that sends me a demo. I'm a old school type of guy, and I'm hearing more and more old school style hardcore which I love.

What are your thoughts on hardcore nowadays, when did you first discover the genre and what exactly is it about this type of music which makes you happy?

My first show was in 84, My oldest brother took me to see Black Flag, I was scared for my life seeing a bunch of older bald sweaty guys killing each other, but the music was real, nothing I heard before. Then I got a tape of Minor Threat, that turned me on to straight edge. Till this day I'm still edge and proud of it. I like the fact that hardcore was about crowd participation, a brotherhood. I still feel the same about hardcore now that I did when i was younger, sure things change, but still love it. I know we have the internet now, but I like paper fanzines at shows, That's how I found out about bands, its cool, cause kids I see at shows are bringing it back, even doing cassettes again.

What’s next in the Irish Voodoo pipeline? Anything else you'd like us to ask? Or anything you'd like to plug/mention?

Lots going on for 2011, COLORS new 7" is out now, SHADOWS double 7' is in the works, RUINED TONGUE 7" dropping very soon, new bands, and our website got a make over. I think what your doing with with HardBoiled is great, we need more people like you. If your not in a band, start a zine, label, pass fliers at shows, book shows, anything to keep hardcore alive.
