Review: Bent Life - Never Asked For Heaven

I saw this band live and the music was so good I knew I had to get this record. The show itself was odd cause the singer didn’t say a word between the tracks, which is not a hardcore standard, but not everyone is Scott Vogel and the music was dope. Special kudos to the guitar man, this dude is crazy and his work carries a lot of weight here. If they make any money on this record he should get the biggest cut. The band goes of their way to fill every track with both force and groove to make sure today’s hardcore audience is satisfied. If you follow what’s hip in hardcore right now I am sure you’ll find a lot of this stuff here. I mean nothing bad, just saying this has all the right ingredients. On top of it, the singer voice is really rough and he spits every word in full fuck-it-all mode. On the downside, I don’t like the way this is produced. They really went for a heavy sound but in the end a lot of details get lost. Overall, this package is complete: ridiculous songs, forceful vocals and murderous hatred for the whole world.

Bridge Nine Signs The Alligators (members of AF and Insted)bers)

[Official info] Four of some of hardcore’s most important names from both coasts got together to finally bring back that early 80′s hardcore sound; this sound is called The Alligators, and they will be releasing a new record on Bridge Nine in 2012. Featuring members Roger Miret (Agnostic Front), Rich Labbate (Insted), Steve Larson (Insted) and Barret Burt (Insted), The Alligators sound a bit like something that might’ve been filed in between Miret’s primary band, Agnostic Front’s, landmark albums United Blood and Victim In Pain and is undoubtedly an old school hardcore band. The Alligators wear their influences on their sleeve – tipping their hat to bands like SSD, Antidote, Negative Approach, Poison Idea, Scream and more. Vocalist Roger Miret commented, “The Alligators has been a fun side project i’ve been doing with the guys from Insted(California Hardcore band from the 80’s) – an odd fit you might think, but make no mistake: those guys are hard. Rich and I have been friends since the early 80’s and periodically talked about doing music together, so this is a record I’ve been meaning to do for a long time coming. With the addition of DYS and Antidote to B9 roster and the re-release of Agnostic Front’s ‘VIP/United Blood’, we are happy to add this to the Bridge Nine family.”

The Alligators’ debut full-length for Bridge Nine Records, titled Time’s Up, You’re Dead, is slated to hit stores on March 27th, 2012 and more information regarding album details, new song premieres and upcoming shows will surface soon.

New merch at Bridge 9 webstore

Bridge 9 got some new merch in their webstore. Here's what to expect: "New shirts from H2O - as most of you know, due to inclement (to say the least) weather on the east coast the last couple of weeks, H2O had to cancel the shows they had planned there. Unlucky for H2O, they were stuck with a ton of merch they didn't get to sell. Lucky for you, we have it available on our webstore! New shirts from Polar Bear Club - some old designs and some new designs for your purchasing pleasure! PS we'll have some exciting PBC-related announcements for 2011 coming soon! New shirts from DYS - DYS! What more needs to be said? Scope the new shirt. I love it. I also love dogs.

Defeater Announces Empty Days & Sleepless Nights - Available March 8, 2011

Official press release: Massachusetts-based Defeater is proud to announce the title and release date for their forthcoming album: Empty Days & Sleepless Nights, available March 8th, 2011 from Bridge Nine Records. The band's second full-length is a double LP, kicking off with ten of the heaviest and most intricately-written songs (Empty Days) Defeater has done to date. Following those ten tracks are four acoustic songs (Sleepless Nights) that sound a lot like Rocky Votolato and Ryan Adams.Guitarist Jay Maas said, "This new album was a very natural progression for us. We'd cut our teeth on an acoustic track on Travels ("Prophet in Plain Clothes") which is one of the most well-received songs we play live. And Derek (Defeater's vocalist) had written some lyrics that worked beautifully against an acoustic canvas so we decided to follow the heavier tracks on this new album up with these songs, resulting in a double LP release." Fans of heavy music should not fret - the first LP features 10 tracks that are incredibly dynamic and huge-sounding melodic hardcore songs. Maas continued, "Empty Days & Sleepless Nights is truly our most realized work yet. While we wrote this record, we really incorporated all of our musical tastes and creative talents. There are some surprises on this record for sure, but also plenty to love for fans of Defeater. We couldn't be more proud of how this album turned out."

Empty Days & Sleepless Nights carries on the narrative songwriting style the band has developed about a family set in post-WWII America in a working class town in New Jersey. We were first introduced to these characters in Defeater's debut LP, Travels, which was released back in 2008 and received great critical acclaim. The album was hailed with such bold accolades as "a new artistic peak for hardcore" (Punknews), "brilliant" (Absolutepunk) and "the perfect definition of modern hardcore" (Lambgoat). Travels was followed up in November of 2009 by the equally well-praised EP Lost Ground, which followed a man's (the "Prophet In Plain Clothes") journey from the military to post-war life. Empty Days & Sleepless Nights traces back to the family setting from Travels, but focuses on the older of the two sons and at times runs parallel to Travels, yet the events now unfold through the older sibling's eyes. Empty Days & Sleepless Nights is another chapter in the conceptual opus that is Defeater.

Empty Days & Sleepless Nights was once again recorded with Defeater's guitarist, Jay Maas, at his own Getaway Recording Studios in Wakefield, MA, throughout Fall of 2010. Maas commented on pulling double duty on the record as guitarist and producer by saying, "It's nice to be behind an idea all the way from it starting in your mind to actually shaping the way it will be heard as a final product. At the same time, there is an extreme level of stress that is reached when working so hard to both write AND record an album. But I wouldn't trade it for the world." Fortunately, Empty Days & Sleepless Nights has benefitted from such TLC and turned out to be an absolute masterpiece.

Check out two songs off of Empty Days & Sleepless Nights by pre-ordering the Dear Father EP, which features one acoustic track ("I Don't Mind") and one heavy track ("Dear Father") from the album now on B9Store.com. This album teaser hits streets on February 8th while the ED&SL full length will be available everywhere on March 8th, 2011. Defeater will tour Europe in February and March with Carpathian.

Death Before Dishonor touring plans

Death Before Dishonor will be storming through the East Coast alongside legendary hardcore band Strife with support on various shows from label mates Cruel Hand, Foundation and more. Following the East Coast dates, Death Before Dishonor will head to the Midwest with thrash kings Suicidal Tendencies and support from Hed PE, Cro Mags, and Underdog starting in Columbus, heading back through New York, and then ending out in Minneapolis. Tour dates are listed below.
In the five years since they originally joined the Bridge Nine roster, Death Before Dishonor has released two full-length albums, two 7 inches, and played thousands of shows around the globe. Last July, Death Before Dishonor released their third and most accomplished studio album to date – Better Ways to Die. This album not only solidifies Death Before Dishonor’s commitment to what they do as a band, but it also displays their unflinching ability and desire to establish themselves outside of clichés and the pre-defined constructs of what it is to be “hardcore.” With their 2007 release of “Count Me In,” Death Before Dishonor caught people off guard as the album debuted on the Billboard Heatseekers Charts, Independent Albums, and Top New Artist charts and stayed there for over four weeks. “If it weren’t for this band, I would be sitting in Massachusetts. In the last two years I’ve been to Australia, Russia, Ukraine, Japan, all across Europe, the US and Canada and I’ve seen all four oceans. We have no reason to stop now", said vocalist Bryan Harris.
