Video: Madball - Doc Marten Stomp

Except for Freddy's haircut, everything is perfect about this track and video.

New Madball track

Doc Marten Stopm is a new track to prepare you for the release of Hardcore Lives album. The track is dope in a way carries on the tradition of classic Ne York sound with a dose of punk in the mix. I am eagerly anticipating this release, the tracks they've released so far are both high powered bangers and one of the finest work in years. The album will include guest cameos from Scott Vogel, Toby Morse and Candace Puopolo which is another reason why it's gonna be sick.

HC Gem: Agnostic Front with Freddy Madball, Montreal, Quebec '92

Here's a cool footage of Agnostic Front's show in Canada from 1992 with Freddy Madball filling in for the vocals in place of Roger. Lots of stuff from One Voice, plus the sound and video quality is not as bad as you would expect from VHS rip.

New Madball track: DNA

So, Madball just dropped new song from the upcoming album, 'Hardcore Lives'. Of course you know how it's gonna sound even before you push play, but honestly, it is probably one of their best tracks in years. The New York posse drops some dope groove as always and Freddy sounds really dedicated and pissed off on this one. I feel like this song really once again got me hyped for anything new from the band.

TMF Hardcore Punk documentary from 90'

This gem was posted to youtube yesterday and I advice everyone to see it. All I know is that TMF is supposed to be a music channel from Belgium which used to cover hardcore/punk music back in the days. At least this 40-minutes documentary focuses on hardcore music and culture. This stuff is great, it intercuts interviews and commentary from dudes like Freddie Madball, Lou SOIA, Choke Slapshot and Onno Cromag with live footage of bands like Cro-Mags, Sheer Terror, Sick Of It All and much more. Definitely must watch for every serious hardcore kid. Sit back and enjoy.

Favorite quote: Everyone is welcome, but it's not for everybody. Eventually, some people gonna realize that there's more to it than just a music.

Today also marks the launch of the band's "I Owe You Nothing" pre-order! Hit the official pre-order link to get your copy now.

S.O.S. is:
Scott Vogel - Vocals (Terror)
Matt Henderson - Guitar (formerly ofAgnostic Front and Madball)
Sam Trapkin - Guitar (Trapped Under Ice)
Chris Beattie - Bass (Hatebreed)
Nick Jett - Drums (Terror)

The band got together over several New York winter days to record their debut EP. Each member contributed to all parts of the creative process, from every riff right down to the vocal patterns. At the helm of production was Dean Baltulonis, a producer and engineer who has been involved with some of the genres most iconic recordings (Agnostic Front, Madball), and was a natural fit for the session. S.O.S. emerged with a concise, tried and true, no frills hardcore EP titled "I Owe You Nothing".

The idea of S.O.S. first started to take shape around two years ago when Scott Vogel, front man for Terror, and Chris Beattie, bass player for Hatebreed, began discussing the possibility of making music together. The two had first met while touring the US together in 1995, and their discussions were simply focused on making music without stress or complications. While there was some back and forth regarding other potential members, the idea took a more serious turn when Matt Henderson, former guitarist of Agnostic Front and Madball, agreed to be involved. This would be Matt's first formal involvement in a band in over five years. For the next member, Vogel had to look no further than his own band mate, Terror drummer Nick Jett. Nick is razor sharp behind the drums and his ability as a prolific songwriter added another creative dimension. To round out the group and put the final piece in place, S.O.S. brought in guitarist Sam Trapkin from one of the best new bands hardcore has seen in years, Trapped Under Ice. Individually, the members of S.O.S. represent the past, present, and future of hardcore. While that warrants recognition in its own right, the music and the spirit is what leads the charge for S.O.S.

"It took years to finally get everyone in the same room, but the result is cool," states vocalist Scott Vogel. "We did what we set out to do; make a fast and angry hardcore record with no gimmicks or nonsense, and just have fun doing it. It seems like today everything is so professional and serious and this was just friends from some of my favorite bands making some music together."

Madball - All Or Nothing

New Agnostic Front 7inch Coming on March 8th from B9!

The Godfathers of New York Hardcore, AGNOSTIC FRONT, are gearing up to release their new full-length, My Life My Way, on March 22nd! The album features 13 new powerful and anthemic songs laid down by Erik Rutan (Madball, Goatwhore, Cannibal Corpse etc.) at his Mana Recording Studio in Tampa, FL under the watchful guide of producer Freddy Cricien of Madball. In preparation, they’ll release two songs to the masses on the That’s Life 7inch, which will be available March 8th from Bridge Nine Records.

On their third collaboration with the band and second time working together with a pre-release album 7inch, Bridge Nine Records couldn’t be more excited about the partnership. Label owner Chris Wrenn commented, “One of my most proud moments here at B9 was re-releasing the Victim In Pain and United Blood records from Agnostic Front in November ‘09. And to open the doors to do so, we worked with AF prior to that on a pre-release 7inch for their album Warriors on Nuclear Blast. It was awesome working with both the band and the label, so we figured – with a new full-length coming out - why not do it again?” The That’s Life 7inch will feature two songs from My Life My Way – “That’s Life” and “Us Against The World” – and will be extremely limited to 2,000 copies worldwide. 1,000 copies of the 7inch will have silk-screened B-sides, while the other 1,000 copies will have hand-etched B-Sides. More information and photos coming soon to Bridge9.com.

Vocalist Roger Miret commented on the new material: “After all is said and done we are amazed on how great our new record turned out! It’s by far our catchiest record to date and it’s going to make everyone want to sing along for sure. Freddy killed it on the production end, just capturing that hardcore vibe that only he can get out of AGNOSTIC FRONT. The boys all put nothing but passion into the songs, and Erik Rutan just dialed it all in to make AGNOSTIC FRONT sound as natural and as organic as ever. This one will definitely be a classic once it’s heard worldwide!”

Details on new Agnostic Front album

Official press release: The Godfathers of New York Hardcore, Agnostic Front, have revealed the cover art and track listing to their upcoming record entitled My Life My Way. Cover artwork was brought to life this time by artist Todd Hubber, who also works with vocalist Roger Miret on designing his street wear clothing line American Made Kustom.

"The concept was to capture the D.I.Y. ethic and crude themed artistry of the early punk flyers, with a nod to the era of crime and pulp comic themes of the early 50's. Society deemed those materials as having no social redeeming values, and as a contributor to youth delinquency. Similarly outcasted were punk and hardcore in the early day for its aggressive, anti-authority message, and dangerous aura. My Life My Way is a throwback to the early days, and Agnostic Front has proven that what society deems unredeeming, has been, still is, and will continue to be relevant."

My Life My Way track listing:

01. City Street
02. More Than a Memory
03. Us Against the World
04. My Life My Way
05. That's Life
06. Self Pride
07. Until the Day I Die
08. Now and Forever
09. The Sacrifice
10. A Mi Manera
11. Your Worst Enemy
12. Empty Dreams
13. Time Has Come

Agnostic Front have uploaded the first of several video blogs chronicling the making of their highly anticipated follow up to their 2007 release, Warriors. Check out the clip at the following location.

Madball - Empire

I have loved the last two Madball Albums (well, i love all of them) - but the last 2 have just been amazing. The spark of adding Riggs and Mitts has catapulted these guys into full dedication mode. Touring non-stop and 3 lps in 5 years; scan't stop, won't stop. And their live shows have been tight and energetic. But this is a new label, new drummer, and new producer.
"Empire" - well, this one is minus Riggs. He is missed. And despite Jay Weinberg NOT being in the band as i type this, he was on the album. And he does a superb job. But the chemistry of Mitts and Hoya and Freddie is undeniable. These dudes are on fire.

lyrically, Freddy continues to grow. I mean, it's still about the streets, but the streets in the context of this world, this government. The spirit remains the same, but the mouth through which these vocals are screamed is a wiser one. Freddy often is caught contemplating the struggle. He sees both sides of the coin. He sees the future and the past when arriving at a fork in the road. He can examine his old ways with lament and reason.

"And no this not about the scene, this is about the relevance in the bigger scheme of things" Freddy's social criticism and political leanings have become strengthened in the past 3 albums, and it is glorious. Good stuff. I mean, he ain't Jello Biafra or anything - but "us vs the system" has been honed in on some specifics. and nice shout of "fuck BP petro" made me smile. Speaking against the sleepwalking clones, the corporate thugs, the consumer, and the complacent.

Music: same formula - no dramatic twist. Just the best hardcore you can have. NYHC. Two-steps and gang chants for the listener to become possessed by. Fast crunching riffs; mid-tempo beats with a hip-hop bounce. Head walks and chest pounds a plenty. The mixing is classic Madball - time changes and channel drops while Freddy screams that lead into breakdowns. Not chugga chugga and breakdown saturated; the main focus is one the importance of racing forward.

That said - they got , who i guess is some Florida Death Metal guru (Cannibal Corpse, etc). He did a fantastic job. No crazy metal tendencies, just hardcore.

Some highlights: Brother roger comes on "Shatterproof"; the Paul Bearer intro to "Hurt You"; two new songs in Spanish; and "Tough Guy" - as i remark on Freddy's obvious maturation, do not take that for growing soft. and this songs harkens back to that sparkplug.

"Con Fuerza" has me throwing haymakers alone in my room and i do not know a lick of Spanish. The tracks "RAHC, "All or Nothing" that we got a peek at 2 weeks prior courtesy of Reaper Records got me picking up change. Invigorate, "Timeless", "Dark Horse" has me looking like a fool waiting for the buss as i shout at the telephone pole and point. i could go on - every song on this album kills. They are each made for the pit; and the revolution. Stand up and fight. And make sure this is your soundtrack.

Sadly, the album closes with "Rebel4Life 1 8" is about Hoya's wife that passed away. My condolences. That must be horrible.

Madball to release 'Empire' in the fall

New York City hardcore legends MADBALL will enter Mana Recording Studios in St. Petersburg, Florida in July with producer Erik Rutan (MISERY INDEX, CANNIBAL CORPSE, GOATWHORE) to begin recording their new album, "Empire", for a late September/early October release via Good Fight Music.

"I think [having Erik working on the album] is a good dynamic," states vocalist Freddy Cricien. "We did the last couple records with a different producer, [but] he was busy, so we were looking for an alternative and [Erik's] name was suggested. I got to talking to him and I found out he has a hardcore background, and he's a big fan of ours. I was really sold at that point because although he does a lot of death metal, he's really eager to approach this in a certain way."

Freddy is also looking forward to utilizing Erik's rich history in production with metal artists, and his fresh outlook on producing "Empire".

"[Erik's] going to use bigger production, and I like that, but he's not going to approach it like a CANNIBAL CORPSE record because the vibe is different, and sometimes that dynamic works," says Cricien. "He's a guy that's used to working with different things but he knows how we want our stuff approached. Erik wants to make a statement with doing a MADBALL record because he's so into the death metal background.

"I'm really psyched about it, really excited.

"If [Erik] was totally oblivious to who we were and what hardcore music was, I'd be skeptical. But that's not the case at all. He's more diverse than his resume shows, at least from speaking with him personally. He's a solid engineer and he has the ear."

Regarding the album's title, Cricien states, "'Empire' will play off of the name. MADBALL has come a long way from being street kids to becoming very established in our genre, and even beyond the music. We're finally at a point in our life where we're taking control of our things, whereas before we didn't have control of some things or didn't choose to have control. We have the feeling that we've built a little empire for ourselves with our band, brand, and different endeavors." He continued, "We get this reference that we're kings of New York."

"There are plenty of awesome bands that have come out of the city. AGNOSTIC FRONT are the godfathers of New York hardcore, SICK OF IT ALL are one of the undisputed champs of the scene... we were always known as more of the bad guys, but now people are calling us the kings. It's not a title we gave ourselves and it's not that we call ourselves that, but it's just a term of endearment and respect that people use and it plays into the name 'Empire'.

According to Cricien, fans of MADBALL should expect the sound that they have always loved, but some evolution as well. "There's a certain sound that we're known for, and as much as we want to evolve with the times, we also have to keep in mind that there's a certain standard and integrity with MADBALL, and we have to preserve that," he says. "Real-deal hardcore kids totally appreciate that. That said, the foundation always has to be a certain sound, but we always bring new elements into our sound. There has to be some evolution. It might appeal to people outside of the hardcore realm, but in the end, it's going to be a MADBALL record."

Since forming in 1988, MADBALL has been responsible for some of the most important releases in the hardcore genre, from the seminal "Ball of Destruction" EP (1989) to the landmark albums "Set It Off" (1994), "Demonstrating My Style" (1996), "Look My Way" (1998), "Hold it Down" (2000), "Legacy" (2005), and their latest release, "Infiltrate the System" (2007).

Madball - Infiltrate The System

Madball - Infiltrate The System
Ferret 2007

Not many of the hardcore bands that started in the 80’ still know how to rock this shit today. Madball are one of the few that have been releasing new records for about 20 years and still keep it tight. Infiltrate The System is an album that stays loyal to the rules of the genre but at the same time brims with fresh ideas.

It starts with We The People and Infiltrate The System, two adrenaline packed hardcore anthems and my favorite songs on the album. They pump up the adrenaline level high since the beginning and never let go till the last song comes to an end. Madball still creates a brand of hardcore that sounds aggressive and fresh and they simply leave all the competition behind. It’s as fast, angry and straight in your system as you would expect it to be, but at the same they know how to pack their songs with hooks and catchy riffs. Lyrically, it takes you on a ride into the real world of today with its conflicts, media control, corrupted systems and injustice. The real life stories and hardcore scene topics are still present, but the socially aware themes set the mood for the album. Don’t get me wrong, it’s not that they’ve become political band, it’s just that you can hear they have matured over the years as far as the lyrics are concerned. To be honest, I’m pretty sure most of you heard this record already so let’s keep it short. Infiltrate The System is an album that deserves a listen from anyone who claims to love hardcore. Madball still remain unbowed!
