Never Face Defeat - Convicted

The Convicted ep brings five songs of fast and heavy hardcore which makes me think of bands like old Sworn Enemy or Hoods but with more metal feel to it. The compositions tend to be complex and even though there is no lack of faster parts, there’s a lot of happening throughout the songs. Hell, the band has been around for over ten years now so they know how to put a song together. My biggest gripe with this album is that sometimes these songs seem to lack focus. The band obviously knows how to handle their shit but they put too much attention to making those tracks sound complex instead of powerful. I got impression that tracks like Determination would sound much more stronger if they cut some of the passages and stick to the elements that really make this song stand out. Don’t get me wrong, I think they’ve got a lot of good ideas and skills to put these ideas into songs, but I guess I’m into more straight forward stuff. Some of the riffs on this album are one of the catchiest I’ve heard in hardcore recently, but the songs lack the bite when they start going to mid-tempos and overdo breakdowns. And it’s a shame cause when they sound more aggressive, it’s really good stuff. For the vinyl freaks; the EP has been released as a three-song seven-inch picture disc and the package also includes CD with all five songs. I like that idea.

Hierophant - Self Titled

This is a debut release from this Italian band and it brings an otherworldly experience of dark, cold, grimy and almost dehumanized hardcore. The band is being often compared to the likes of Trap Them or His Hero Is Gone with a dose of that evil Cleveland sound but they do branch out to the other genres a lot with much more some seriously fucked up shit going on. What I like about Hierophant is that while they do bear some similarities to those bands, they definitely got their own ways of doing what they do and it comes across as being totally natural and not forced in any way. The songs are very diverse and experimental, with style ranking from slow and atmospheric to fast and evil and you basically never know what’s gonna happen next. There are a lot of slower, sludgy parts and interludes, but they also know how to amp it up to almost blastbeat tempos. The album takes as much from hardcore in its most chaotic and heaviest form, as from sludge and black metal. It's a combination that works and the songs are powerful and dynamic. There is also a guest appearance from no one else but Dwid Hellion on As Kalki so I guess it makes it an album to check out for all the Integrity fans.

This is not the album that grabs you up front, it took some time in my case to get into this but the patience really paid off. When you combine clever and creative songwriting, and willingness to experiment you’re bound to have a crushing release. It is a very well constructed, strong and engaging.

Edge Of Spirit - Edge Of Spirit

If you know anything about Japanese hardcore there’s a big chance that the name Edge Of Spirit rings the bells. The band has been around since 1997 and during that time has released a shit load of material – four big albums, couple of splits and appeared on countless compilations. With their fourth, self titled album, Edge Of Spirit brings to the table one of the more violent metalcore albums I’ve heard in a long time. It is packed with rage filled riffing, double bass played like an assassin, soul raping vocals and ultra mega breakdown grooves. The songs are complex and excellently executed. The band is focused on all-out brutality, taking you on a ride down the memory lane to the times when passion and honesty were a must in a metalcore game. They might be not the most technically skilled band around, but somehow I can’t be bothered by that. The guitar work here is pretty impressive anyway, delivering shredding riffs as violently as possible, but also laying some groove now and then throughout the album. There's a pretty heavy melodic, Swedish influence going on in the riffs as well, but they still know how to make it bite. Throat ripping vocals only boost the level of adrenaline, while the rhythm section is precise and on point. Production and sound are top-notch with every instrument and vocals having the great placement. I also gotta mention that the whole stuff is packed with a dope artwork.

The band may not be pushing any boundaries, but they surely know how to unleash a beast of an album. I am not that familiar with their previous releases, but it would be hard for me to believe this new album is not their strongest effort yet.

Straight To Your Face - The Struggle

It’s been two years since Denmark-based Straight To Your Faced released an album, but the wait is over with the release of The Struggle. It’s an album of pure hardcore goodness with some of killer tracks such as ‘The Struggle’ and ‘Back In The Ring’. The songs come hard and fast with some slick grooves and sick sing along parts.
The band has a knack for writing catchy tunes so the album definitely doesn’t disappoint. Their style is heavily influenced by NYHC sound laced over with a hint of metal, not unlike bands like Madball, Terror or Backfire!. The songs are pretty much straight forward but they pack them with enough hooks to keep your attention all the time throughout the album. Thanks to superb work of Jakob Bredahl , the production is fat and heavy giving these songs even a bigger adrenaline boost. If you like your hardcore rough and without too much useless technical wankery, you should give this one a go.

Feet First - Heaven Home Hell

To be honest, I didn’t pay much attention to their previous album but I remember it being heavy and harsh with pretty much straightforward approach. Now, three years later, we get ‘Heaven Home Hell’ and while it obviously follows the same script, you gotta give them a credit for working hard to make their music more dope and vibrant.
The tone of the album is intense and heavy hardcore, always from an attack position. Dual vocals work pretty well for them and backed by skilled musicianship, it makes this CD pretty enjoyable. Musically, it is well sequenced and while the music doesn’t necessarily switch too much, the emotions and dedication they put into these songs make it a good ride throughout. Feet First has managed to stay relevant by not chasing trends. Compared to their previous album, they didn't change the recipe that much: you can still expect tons of hardass beats good for kick-boxing. This is a type of band that can incorporate metal into their music and still manage to maintain a hardcore attitude. With songs like Your Churches Still Burning or Widerstand Feet First comes out swinging with powerful hooks and neck breaking mosh parts, but they also got a knack for more old school flavored songs like Beast From The East. Is Heaven Home Hell by any means a classic album? No, but it is dope and heavy and is going to be a good piece for your collection if you like when hardcore makes you wanna break your bench press record or just punch some Nazi in the eye. Approved!
