Throwback Thursday: Biohazard - A Lot To Learn

Human Demise - The Odditorium

Human Demise brings us their new album and they are here to blow us away with some of the most powerful tunes I’ve heard lately. I like their mentality on this album – ne time is wasted on bullshit, the band is getting straight to the point from the first notes. The moment the first song busts out of the speakers you can feel the music coming at your neck and it never lets go.

The overall feeling of the album is somewhere between brutality and darkness. Comparisons have been made between Human Demise and names like Ringworm or Integrity and it’s not far from the truth. Too much of a good thing can be a curse, and that also goes for the whole Holy Terror trend we’ve beet witnessing lately. One can’t deny that it gave us a lot of dope bands that really know how to do this shit right, but it also spawned bunch of copycats that are just lame and silly. Luckily, if you look at Human Demise in this way, they definitely fall into the first group and hold their own in this crowded scene. While they do have a lot in common with Cleveland sound, somehow they also manage to have a style that’s all their own. From creative but heavy guitar riffs and solos, to intense drumming and sick vocals, every piece come together flawlessly. A lot of good things can be said about the vocals. I think Maurice is doing a great job here, putting a lot of emotions in every line he spits. Much of the albums grasp can be credited to him.

It’s good to see this band getting better and better with every release. Their sound is richer and songs more complex, but at the same time they still know how to hit it where it hurts.

Purification statement on rumors about them being...

Official statement from Andrea Campanelli, Purification guitar player:

In reply to the false rumors that have been circulating, we want to make clear that Purification NEVER had, has or will have anything to do with any xenophobe, nationalist, fascist or nazist movement.

We are outraged by those people filled with envy and hate with nothing better to do that spread false news over the web to put Purification in a bad light.

We invite also whoever has any doubt or question about Purification to talk to us at any of the upcoming European shows.

Warm regards

One Strength! - Change By Chance

Here's new song from Australia based One Strength! Nice and moving hardcore with some melody thrown in for a good measure. I urge you to visit their website and read the lyrics to this one - it's worth it!

Still Screaming - From The Ashes Of A Dead Time

Still Screaming owes a great debt to the classic NYHC sound. Actually, it sounds more like an European interpretation of this style, bringing to mind bands like Only Attitude Counts or Backfire. It’s nothing new, but I can’t help liking this album. The band doesn’t try any new tricks, but if it works, why mess with the formula?

The album is filled with gang vocals, circle pit parts and breakdowns and it’s enough to make every fan of the genre happy. My only problem with this album is that I find it very hard to pick out a song or two that stand out from the rest. Basically, all of the them are sounding pretty much equal. I don’t even know if I should consider it as a minus here cause overall, the album is a good listen on a whole. I also got to mention the superb artwork on this one. Not only cover, but the whole insert looks great with lots of pics and all the lyrics. You’re definitely getting some quality for your buck!

Still Screaming have been around for a while and had time to learn their craft so you can expect quality hardcore from them and there’s no disappointment here. Check it out if you dig this style of hardcore.

Creeping Death - Demo 2009

Holy shit, this stuff sounds so powerful! Creeping Death play hardcore with a huge dose of thrash influences. Their sound is near perfection with complex song writing, tight musicianship and insane vocals on top of it. Riffs are razor shape and rhythm section always on point.
They even throw in some solos now and then. If I had to pick my favorite track, I would go for Turn To Dust – it is a truly great song and surely gets stuck in your ears quite fast. Actually I couldn't pick out a song here that's not awesome. The demo is all fluid and coherent and I’m really surprised they haven’t been picked up by any label yet.

”We’re more than happy to enter the studio with Jonas Kjellgren again! He recorded our last two releases ”Death Of A Nation” (DVI) and our first full length ”Day Of Defiance” (GSR) and we can’t be more satisfied with that sound. This time we feel stronger and more focused than ever. Patrick grown a lot with his lyrics as he explored some material about ”the Four Horsemen” that will be the theme on this album. Im proud to have a true legend like HF of Ringworm screaming a couple of lines on our record and satisfied to have Dave Quiggle from N.I.V. doing the artwork. Thick as Blood - All Or Nothing

Drama

Drama from Barcelona (Spain) brings some good old hardcore/punk vibes with a nice metallic touch. They've been compared to classic acts like Cro-Mags and listening to some of the newer songs I could agree with that. The band has just released their new 7" called Sin Perdon. Give it a read!

Name: DRAMA
Michelle: vocals
Elena: guitar
Pablo: bass
Sylv: drums

Location: Barcelona-Spain

Active since: 2005

How do you define your overall style?
Raw hardcore with a little of metallic riffs and punk as fuck.

What’s your goal with this band?
More shows, veggie food, beers, cherry juice, meeting cool people and have a lot of fun playing.
Now seriously, our goal as a band is to express our anger against patriarchy, the manipulation of ideas, the transformation of reality imposed by governments, conformist and consumerist society, we want to create awareness among people willing to change their environment and make their lives a lil’ more free. Raise our voices so this way people can think about it and make conscience.

What do you have recorded so far?
We have recorded until now: a demo CD (2005), a 7 inch titled CREACIÓN DESTRUCTIVA (2007), and recently a new 7" titled SIN PERDÓN (2010).

Can you give me a brief background on the band and what you guys are currently up to at this moment?
The first steps of DRAMA were exactly in 2003 when the previous band where Elena and Sylvia played broke-up, so that year Michelle came to live to Barcelona and we met and talked about start a new band, and then we started the rehearsals playing some covers. After a long time looking for a vocalist, we decided that Michelle had to change the bass for the vocals, and now the quest was for a bass player and it wasn’t until 2005 that Pablo joint to the band. Throughout this time we have been playing loads of shows in the Barcelona hardcore punk scene, and we have always tried to make some short trips around the Spanish state (Basque Country, Castellón, Alicante, Murcia, Zaragoza, etc) and also abroad (Germany and Poland). There are many special moments and they can't be named all, but it’s worth mentioning some examples that describe the course of the band, like going on tour with a Twingo, Lady fest in Warsaw, Take Back The Night fest in Hamburg, the release show of our first 7” at “Ateneu de Vallcarca” and the shows with Yoli (from our sister band, Go! Popitas) helping us with the bass.
Recently we came from Germany due a short tour around there, thanks to Dominik-NATD PRODUCTIONS (our beloved German hommie!) who booked the tour and gave us the chance had a great experience. We enjoyed a lot play those shows and we hope be back soon, and of course have the chance to play in other European countries, JUST LET US KNOW IT! We would be pleasant to hit your town! Now we have to play more shows and work on write more songs because we want to record a LP, as soon as we can.

What are some other bands you are or have been involved in?
Michelle: Sylvia and Elena used to play in a band called ASPERSORES, now they play in bands like BORN TO HATE and GO! POPITAS.
Pablo: I’ve always played in hardcore and punk rock bands (and also other genres) but it's the style i found the best to get and give strength, to carry on with our way of thinking and feelings.

Where did the band's name come from? Has it anything to do with an economical turmoil which is happening right now? It seems like Spain has been hit hard by the crisis...
The name comes from a L7’s song titled DRAMA, which is a cool song, we were a long time looking for a name, and so one day it came suddenly and we liked and decided to have that name.
Obviously it has it anything to do with the current economical crisis. The crisis now is hitting hard the Spanish economy, and it reveals the weakness of the economic model that we've had for the last years. The important thing to notice is that the crisis is hitting the working class people. We've got an unemployment rate over 19%, and a lot of people have no income, or the income is too low. The real "Drama" of the crisis is that the recovery (if there will be any recovery) will impose a heavier weight for the working class, cutting our social and labour rights, and the conditions of living will be permanently lowering. There's not a wide and strong social response to that, so that is what we have to work in.

Lyrically what kind of themes you deal with? What is the message you’re trying to present to your listeners? Almost all the lyrics contain a social message, some kind of denounce to all the injustice and prejudice that this sick world has, all that deserve our contempt.
For example, from our previous record, CREACIÓN DESTRUCTIVA, there's a song tilted GOOD NIGHT, what it is about against all nazi scum and racial supremacy. From our new record, SIN PERDÓN, this song is about tyrants; about how wicked can be a "person" just for his megalomania.
Also some lyrics stand against sexism and patriarchy like IT’S NOW or LIBRES or deal about personal things like THE DEMON or ROMPIENDO EL SILENCIO.

Starting Drama what bands did you listen to? Who influenced you as an artist?
We have several influences because we like different kind of music styles from pop, rock & roll, punk-rock to death/black metal, but it’s clear that our backbone is HARDCORE, we like the style of 80’S NYHC like CRO-MAGS and 90’s hc bands like INTEGRITY, for example.

What’s your definition of a real hardcore show?
The show must be with a big flag, giving the reason for that special meeting, many bands playing and all the people singing, the bands' songs and popular songs, you know, some covers or so. We use to see the shows as a kind of demonstration, with an important social partner, the music. We could define a real hc show like the one we had in Erlangen (Germany) this last tour, with people dancing, singing-along, having a good time, respecting each other. That’s perfect environment of an hc show.

What's your pick for best hardcore release of 2009 and what albums do you anticipate in 2010?
Michelle: to me best hc records 2009 were: NAYSAYER "NO REMORSE", BAD CHOICE "DEMO", BACKTRACK "DEAL WITH THE DEVIL", THE DEFENSE “STATEMENT”.
This 2010 maybe will bring new good records like DOWN TO NOTHING new 7” and new Terror’s LP. There’s a new release of a hardcore band from Castellón-Spain called OPPUGNO, brutal hc in the vein of 100 DEMONS, check them out cause they rule!

Could you tell us about Clitocore zine one of you is involved in?
Michelle and Elena are involved in CLITOCORE ZINE. Until now it has been released 5 issues, and working on a new one although it’s taking a long time because our personal affairs don’t allow us to have the enough time to work on it. Anyone interested to know about the fanzine go to: WWW.MYSPACE.COM/CLITOCOREZINE

Thanx for taking your time. Any last shouts out before we end this ?
Thanks a lot for the support and give us the chance featuring on your webzine. Keep on the good work! HC STILL LIVES!

Bridge Nine Signs Mother Of Mercy

Bridge Nine Records has signed Mother of Mercy. The band will enter the studio this Summer to record new album. More info after the jump.

Here's official statement from the label [link]:

Bridge Nine is excited to welcome one of two new artists to their roster - first is one of the hardest bands coming out of Pennsylvania, Mother of Mercy. Formed in the Spring of 2007 and featuring ex members of Let Down, Mother of Mercy plays contemporary metallic hardcore that draws some of the best elements of 90's 'core with a well-executed tinge of metal. Their music is raw, abrasive and dark - highly influenced by Samhain, Undertow and Obituary - and a welcomed addition to the B9 family. Mother of Mercy's vocalist, Bob Wilson, said "...we're excited to be on the label, to play with different bands, tour exotic places and be label mates with Striking Distance."

Mother of Mercy has spent the last several years on the road alongside bands like Comeback Kid, Dead Swans, Cruel Hand, Title Fight, Foundation, Alpha & Omega, and playing staple hardcore festivals like United Blood, This Is Hardcore, and Sound and Fury. With several prior releases including the No Eden 7" and critically acclaimed III that was released last year on Six Feet Under Records and hailed as one of ScenePointBlank's "favorite records of the year", Mother of Mercy's upcoming Bridge Nine debut full length will be nothing less than stellar. Expect the band to hit the studio early this summer and stay tuned for details on a full-length release later in 2010.

Fast and pissed off youth crew from UK with a strong SxE message. They definitely provide good soundtrack for some circle pit action. Here's a short interview with the band.

Fast and pissed off youth crew from UK with a strong SxE message. They definitely provide good soundtrack for some circle pit action. Here's a short interview with the band.

When did the band get together and how?
The band as it is now originally started in 2007 with Me Mike, Smit and Gio. We were members of bands around in manchester at that time and we wanted to do something different to what was around at the time. We have gone through a few line up changes since then but we have never changed our message and we are all still straight edge and will continue to be.

Who are your Influences'
Are influences are bands like Carry On, Project X, Floorpunch and Chain of strength.

How do you think the scene is doing in England and Worldwide?
In England it pretty much depends on where you play. There are places that are better than others. Theres not really that many bands in the Uk that play our style of Hardcore so we're in a minority in that respect but when you go to shows everyone has fun and appreciates all the bands (usually) so its ok I guess.
As for worldwide, I know the scene is pretty big in Europe. We played a couple of shows in Europe recently and we all loved it. Austria was really good. We would love to play more shows overseas and and we're always open to offers.

Have you any shows planned in Middle/Eastern Europe?
Nothing booked as of yet but I think we are planning to do a few shows next year so hopefully that will work out ok.

Where do you most like to play live?
Theres no specific place that we most like to play but generally we prefer smaller venues. This is because there always seems to be more energy and the bands seem to get a better reaction.

Who would be your favorite band to share a stage with?
Im sure we all have different opinions of that and we'd disagree but in the past we have played with some great bands like Down to Nothing, No Turning Back and Internal Affairs. They were probably the best.

What Are you working on In The Studio At The Moment?
We have just finished re recording songs for our new record which should be out before Christmas. We recorded them with Gav our guitarist and he did all the recording and mixing. We have two new songs on our page so check them out if you're interested.

What Are Your Main Lyrical Influences when you are writing songs/records?
You would be better asking Smit, Im not sure what his main lyrical influence is but I guess he just writes about the hardcore scene and life in general.

Do you have any specific rituals for the studio or just go in and play?
Dunno just play I guess.

What do you think the high point has been for the band so far?
Im not sure really there has been many highs. Personally i think there is a new high point everytime we get a good reaction at a show.

Una Vida / Monsieur Po - Split

This CD is the first time I have a chance to hear both bands that are featured here. First part of it belongs to Spanish owned Una Vida. Their style can be described as a heavy old school hardcore with some new school influences.

They sound promising, but they’re not yet there. Although well executed, their music is too predictable in my opinion. They got some good ideas, but they need to step their game up and add some more power to their sound. The production is just right for this type of hardcore. This split is their first official release and it’s a decent start, but these guys have a long way to go.

Monsieur Po ante things up a little bit displaying more metallic approach. The tempo is diverse and on the whole the band is good at varying the music. They’ve got a good thrashy vibe now and then. There’s no shortage of fast parts but there are lots of breakdowns in the songs as well. I like the production, it’s dirty but still fat and meaty. I am definitely down for checking their next recordings.

While I wasn't blown away by this record, I can certainly appreciate good work both bands are displaying here

First Blood posted new song from the upcoming album

First Blood posted new song from the upcoming album, Silence Is Betrayal. We've been hearing about this album since about 2008 and it's kinda surprising that it took them so long to release it. Check it out here. Official press release from Trustkill after the break

The Bay Area's heaviest band will hit the studio in January/February of 2008 to record their follow-up album with producer Zach Ohren (All Shall Perish). Expect the crushing hardcore/metal you have come to love from FIRST BLOOD with more lyrics that will question everything around you. GET STOKED!

Singer Carl Schwartz said "Thankfully there hasn't been a shortage of stuff in the world to be pissed-off about, so this upcoming album will be nothing short of brutal - and quite possibly the most critical, condemning, and controversial material we will ever release. For fans of FIRST BLOOD - Yes, this album will be every bit as heavy and crushing as the first, and then some. But the focus of this album resides in the message. There is simply too much going on in the world today to ignore, and if we are going to dedicate our time and lives to writing music and constantly touring the world while getting very little in return, then we might as well make it worth it and MAKE A F***ING STATEMENT. I find this world becoming increasingly hostile while the powers that be continue to undertake massive efforts to induce us all into passivity, conformity, and false sense of comfort. Well, life is not comfortable and it is our turn to stir the pot."

Life Of Agony and I Scream Records sign worldwide deal

I Scream Records is very excited and proud to welcome Life Of Agony to the family.

On Saturday April 3rd 2010 I Scream Records will be recording & filming Life Of Agony's performance at the Ancienne Belgique in Brussels, Belgium, the second show of their exclusive European "20 Years Strong" tour. In late 2009 the band performed their debut album "River Runs Red" in its entirety during a few exclusive, sold out, US shows and now, after popular demand, they're also heading over to Europe to perform a set built around this amazing, legendary album.

The release of this "20 Years Strong" live album, which will also include a free bonus DVD of the complete show at the Ancienne Belgique, exclusive footage and much more, is set for early this Summer.

Crossover-metal kings, Life of Agony, formed in the summer of '89 and quickly built a cult-following upon the release their now classic, debut album, "River Runs Red" released through Roadrunner Records. The band's unique sound and honest lyrics have captivated audiences for two decades now. In celebration of this huge milestone, the group has been performing the record that started it all!!

"We're really excited to capture this moment in time. Twenty years, man, that's no joke! If you would've asked us when we were kids growin' up in Brooklyn, if we thought that we'd ever make something this important to people around the world, we probably would've laughed in your face. But, here we are, still selling out shows after all this time and turning people's tragedy into hope. Somehow, through the music, we've helped a lot of folks out there. And that's what's always been most important to us." - LOA Bassist, Alan Robert

Laurens Kusters says: "We're very excited about this collaboration. This will be an amazing release, recorded at the Ancienne Belgique, one of the most exclusive European clubs, in Brussels Belgium, the city where I Scream Records was founded in 1994."

Cheech - Pagan

Cheech - People Against Goodness And Normalcy to be released by NGS

NGS will reissue P.A.G.A.N. from the Boston outlaws Cheech. Here's the official statement from the NGS:

Six new tracks plus 5 old hits from Boston's biggest headache. Fans of Blood For Blood and Wisdom in Chains should be all over this. Even has guest vocals by the Rev. Paul Bearer of Sheer Terror. Their best outing to date, but don't just take my word for it...

"CHEECH's vocals and tuff-but-catchy riffs reminded me of BLOOD FOR BLOOD... worth checking out if you're the type of person who goes to hardcore shows to let off some pent-up aggression in the pit. Looks like Boston is back on the map" -Maximum Rock N' Roll.

"Heavy hardcore sees the Boston dudes progressing even more so than on "Ante Up". An amazing blend of Hardcore, metal, punk and thrash. Straight gruff vocals are placed perfectly over pummeling drums, brilliant bass lines and heavy thrashy riffs." -EmptyhandsPVD

"CHEECH play metal-tinged NYHC reminiscent of BLOOD FOR BLOOD, MADBALL and with a touch of GANG GREEN – it’s heavy and forceful but melodic and catchy too. Paul Bearer from SHEER TERROR makes a guest appearance on their second track which is a seal of approval for sure" -No Front Teeth Zine

Unless you're new around here, you know that Maximum Rock n' Roll hates us, and we hate them. So that's a pretty good stamp of approval right there.
