Caught In A Trap - Rats Get Fat

Caught In A Trap - Rats Get Fat
No Joke Records, 2007

Do my ears deceive me, or is Caught In A Trap one of the best NYHC bands I’ve heard lately. Rats Get Fat is no holds barred hardcore played with total respect to the roots of the genre. They will take you back when it was ok to play it fast and furious and bands didn’t have to pack their songs with tons of breakdowns.

The songs are simple but catchy and they borrow a lot of elements from crossover and punk rock. Even at its most ‘heard it before’ moments, Rats Get Fat consistently keeps your interest. The production is raw but it has never been an issue in hardcore and fits the music perfectly. Lyrically, it’s a combination of anger, down to life themes and personal issues. Definitely stuff you can relate to. Packed with sincerity and intensity, Rats Get Fat is a strong entry in the genre and I can’t wait to hear more from this band!

Grankapo - Confessions

Grankapo - Confessions
Hell Xis Records, 2008

Grankapo bring nothing but energy on their debut release. While not being the most original, it certainly offers listeners its fair share of hardcore aggression.

The music is typical contemporary hardcore and it’s not hard to guess what bands have the biggest influence on them. Most of all they remind me of Madball from Hold It Down and Look My Way era. It’s almost the same vibe and vocalist Rui Fac sounds almost like Freddy himself. I know some can hold it against the band but just try to look at it as a record made by guys who clearly love NYHC, for the enjoyment of other guys who love NYHC. I can't say that they match the quality of their influences, but they aren't bad either. Even though all the songs on the Confessions aren’t much different from each other, it doesn’t bother me that much cause it’s a good listen anyway. Lyrically, it’s typical personal stuff, nothing ground breaking, but some lines are pretty well written. The most memorable track is To My Son, a great song with guest rap vocals and lyrics portraying the theme of fatherly love. When was the last time you heard a hardcore song from a proud father singing how much he loves his child and would always be there for him?!
When it comes down to it, Grankapo managed to find its niche in the scene and even if their style is nothing original, they deliver some good tunes and this album is worth a listen if you’re into NYHC.

1125 - For When Tomorrow Comes

1125 - For When Tomorrow Comes
Spook Records, 2008

Talking with my fellow hardcore kids from other countries it amazes me how few of them know anything about this band. It’s pretty surprising, considering the band’s first record came out in 1997 and since then has released six full lengths all together (not including two splits), all of them of top quality.

There's plenty to like about 1125. What I dig the most about this album is that even if they made things heavier when compared to their previous releases, they still got the speed, the power and the intensity. 1125 can assault you with adrenaline filled fast part, but also pull back the tempo into nasty breakdowns and groovy mid-tempos. There is nice interaction between both guitars and the rhythm section is sick! These guys out do themselves with each releases and there’s rarely a moment on this new album that’s wasted. The production is noticeably superior to what I've heard from their previous efforts. All the instruments sound clean but thankfully without losing any of the edge. Another high point of this album is vocalist. He’s got really deep and powerful voice and it’s hard to compare him to any other singer in the hardcore scene right now. It is an honest, respectable, and powerful hardcore album from beginning to end. I’m sure the sheer energy and aggression that are showcased here will cause many to pay more attention to what’s going on in the east side of Europe.

Pre-order of the Pulling Teeth new album has started

Pulling Teeth "Bloodwolves" MP3 up now on Deathwish website. Pre-order of the new album has started. The first 300 Pre-orders will receive a copy of Pulling Teeth's "Witches Sabbath 05" 7"EP for FREE. The only way to get this 7"EP is through this Pre-order, so be sure to order now to better your chances of getting this rare 7"EP...

"Paranoid Delusions | Paradise Illusions" is the latest work from Baltimore hardcore mainstays, Pulling Teeth. Painstakingly recorded and engineered by Chris Camden at Ultrasound over a three month period, "Paranoid Delusions | Paradise Illusions" is a conceptual piece of immense artistic depth and darkness.

Songs like the bruising "Unsatisfied" dig deep to reveal monstrous dirges that rival any doom metal artist. While the Slayer influenced "Bloodwolves" is as volatile and infectious as a song can be. Though the aforementioned songs are truly brilliant works, it is Pulling Teeth's new found mastery of emotional ebb and flow which shines as their real strength. This awe inducing quality is revealed in the stunning two title tracks, "Paranoid Delusions | Paradise Illusions". Collectively both songs are a monumental achievement of soulful guitar work, Moog driven textures, and insightful prose. A near perfect example of how a band can evolve without abandoning the heart and raw energy that defines the "hardcore/punk" genre at its very core.

The "Witches Sabbath" 7"EP series by Pulling Teeth features musical tributes/renditions of the bands which have influenced Pulling Teeth since their inception. The musical content of each 7"EP in the series remains secret and unlisted on the minimal packaging of each release. The only way to find out what song(s) are on your 7"EP is by experiencing it for yourself.

For Those With Honor is back with a new Ep

After long anticipation, For Those With Honor is back with the follow up to there 2006 ep. The new Ep entitled "Beleive in This" takes straight up hardcore, mixes some new school beatdown and adds some punky flavor to it. The new ep showcases the bands talent, and is a big step up from the previous release. From its catchy riffs and funny song titles such as "You said give me space so I gave you NASA" and "We write beatdowns not breakdowns",to the melodic melodies and brutal breakdowns one thing is for sure this is one ep you won't forget.

Give it a listen here.

Born To Hate - S/T

Born To Hate - S/T
Cruzade/Fragment Music, 2008

I hope most of you have read the interview with Born To Hate I posted some time ago. If not, I’ll give you brief run down on the band. They’re from Spain, took their name from one of the Death Threat’s songs and after struggling for couple of years with line up changes, last year they finally released their first MCD. And, if it’s of any importance to you, it’s a 100% female hardcore band.

If you think girls can’t mosh, Born To Hate is gonna prove you wrong, and it’s gonna do it hard way! First song, A Sangre Fuego, gets things started with mid tempo passage before exploding into raging hardcore that dominates the majority of the album. Most of the songs are fast paced and aggressive but they do make use of a nice breakdown now and then. I appreciate the fact they are keeping the music straight-forward, no gimmicks. These girls obviously learned their hardcore licks from the bands like Agnostic Front and early Cro Mags, but their music also have a nice punk touch to it. Born To Hate’s debut does have a small flaw, however. It took me some time to get used to vocals. It’s not because it’s a girl’s voice, it’s just a shouting way of singing and I’m not much into it in general. I think they need to work on this aspect on their next effort. Beside that, this is pretty good CD. It's worth a few spins if you're in the mood for some straight forward shit.

Pray The Martyr

Name: Pray the Martyr

Location: Arkhangelsk, Russian Federation

Active since: March 2007

Special Move: Our music is heavy mosh-machine from Russian North, but we are trying to write songs which are not alike with other simply brutal bands. We understand that issued material is not masterpiece without analogues, but we are trying to develop ourselves and to include some specific moments, maybe not usual for brutal hardcore music, in some other songs. We try to be "brutal guys with brains". Of course, now we're just forming our style cuz we are too young and ugly, but we love music, we love hardcore, and it always was our dream to be a music band. Besides, we write texts not about “glory and pride”, but about human inner world, his actual problems, trying to make our lyrics as poetical as possible. Brutal, but poetical.

Stuff recorded so far: We recorded 4 songs for EP and 3 songs more. Now we are going to re-record our stuff for better quality and to record some songs more to have LP. May be, it will be worth issuing it abroad, who knows) We issued our EP ourselves just to let people know about us. We want better sound, first of all.

Dream City – what does this title mean to you?
Every person, who lives in big city or a small town, knows that there are a lot of problems on the streets, criminal elements, etc. And, of course, you stay face to face with ignorance of people. Of course, the title of song is allegorical. Somebody fights for his living area, despite the fact that there's no war. Why? Cuz it was always. For no reason. Us and them, their region of town and ours, for example. Evil causes evil.

What bands did have the biggest influence on your sound?
Hatebreed, Remembering Never, Born From Pain, Crowbar, Buried Alive, Nora. Also we listen to great amount of bands, you know.

Why did you went through so many line up changes?
These are the problems of a small town like Arkhangelsk, bro. No equipped musicians, very small amount of people interested in such kind of music. Curiosity borns desire, and in small towns there's lack of curiosity, you know.

Is it hard to find people to play in Arkhangelsk?
It's very hard. No good drummers, may be 3 or 4, and they play in 3 or 4 bands each, for example.

How is hardcore scene in your area and in Russia in general?
In Arkhangelsk region hardcore scene includes 5 or 6 bands. Street-punk mostly, one band plays d-beat/discore (called Trotyl Equivalent Dissonance). We are the only metallised hardcore band in Arkhangelsk. Punk-hardcore audience in our region consists mostly of drunk punk-rock kids, you know) But also we have educated guys, they know what hardcore is, how to do things. We have some sXe and vegans, also.
In Russia, to my mind, we have no REAL hardcore family, that's bad. Despite the fact that almost everybody talks about “unity”, “we are together” etc. In Russia, we have excellent relations between musicians from different bands, but hardcore kids and “forum-speakers” have very strange attitude to the scene. Strange borders between people. “You are not sXe – I won't listen your music even if it is brilliant”, “I'm true hardcore kid – you are not”, “You are smoking – go to hell”, “You play in sXe-vegan band – I will write on forums that you like meat”, etc. But, I suppose, it's a usual situation for the whole world. People like to talk. No real support of Russian bands in big cities. Our fans choose bands from abroad, you know. Of course, bands have their support. But lots of hardcore people try to create specific way of behavior for everybody, who's trying to enter “the family”, I think. It's silly. Loud phrases, nothing more. We are not military organization. You may be not vegan or smth, but you are a MAN, you're trying to do good things, not to hurt weak person, change the world to something good. You will always help the weak, you will always help your friend. You can change something in yourself. It's hardcore. Don't judge people, do something. Stop “scene police”!

What’s the biggest problem Russian hardcore scene is facing now?
No real support of Russian bands in big cities. Scene police on forums. Too much speaking, doing nothing at the same time.

How does typical Russian hardcore show look like?
So, there are enthusiastic kids on show, singing songs of their favorite bands, dancing mosh, etc. And, of course, a lot of skeptical people on shows, trying to compare what is happening NOW with their idea of HOW IT SHOULD BE. But, as it was said, hardcore show looks like this all over the world, I think

Old school vs. new school?
Both have something that musician can use. It's music, it's word, it's your soul. But, of course, technically, new-school is closer to us. If you only want to play 2 accords, and your band is created only to spread ideas in texts – write books, stop playing. Your music must be listenable.

Metal vs. punk rock?
Both. Metal has aggression, emotions. Punk has atmosphere, it is our childhood).
Why people should listen to Pray The Martyr and Russian bands in general?
Sometimes we have terrible conditions of creating music, but we like what we do and we wanna do it again and again!)

No Way Out - Contempt

No Way Out - Contempt
Dogfight, 2008

According to their myspace profile, they have already started working on their new CD. Even though, their debut Contempt from 2008 is still fresh and since I guess most kids outside the Australia are not familiar with them, it’s time to shed some light on this one.

I have to be honest, at first I just couldn’t get into this one. But the more I listened to the album, the more I was able to appreciate the energy and intensity of the songs. I still think that some parts of the record, like the ending of the title song Contempt, are passable and simply work against them, but these moments are luckily outshined but some really tight songs, like my personal favorite on the album, Bangerang. What I like about it is the perfect balance between pure hardcore aggression and melody. One moment they sound like a regular mosh-core band and next they throw in some creative guitar work to give songs some depth. They show a lot of creativity on this album and it sometimes make them sound like Evergreen Terrace playing Until The End songs. Probably the band’s biggest strength lays in their ability to easily switch from heavy to melodic without losing consistency. Just listen to Bangerang or 605 and you’ll know what I mean.
Even if some of the songs on this one seem to be forgettable, it doesn’t fail to deliver real gems and in the end, Contempt is actually a good record and got some good vibes goin on. It’s diversified enough to keep your attention and at the same highly moshable so all the pit warriors should find it a worthwhile grab.

Rebel Troops

Name: Rebel Troops :Mez(throat) Chris(guitar) Kane(drums) Sid(bass) Jonny(guitar)

Location: Boston (uk!)

Active since: Started with me(Chris)and Kane(drums) jammin Jan 08,first gig was July 08 so we are the new boys on the scene!

Special Move: Being able to play it fast but able to maintain the heavy as fuck side and keepin the sound and style apart from other bands,i write riffs i want to hear not what i think other people wana hear.

Stuff recorded so far: Just done a four track demo so check it out, gonna record another four songs in the next few months to make an 8track album.

What’s up with the name, Rebel Troops? What are you rebelling against?
Really liked the sound of it, esp when you hear on news reports how armys and so on have been blasted or shot at by rebel troops!I suppose we're rebellin against allsorts, esp the people walking around this shitty little town thinkin they are gangsta's,or the bands that just rip off other bands, also those preachy fuckers who give it the 'im more punk than you' even tho they are wearing the same bondage trousers& leather jackets that started back in the 70's.Even tho they're 16 or 17 purposly dressing down even tho mummy and daddy got more money than sense, Back then it was differant to dress like that, today its just a uniform just like the chavs and thier burberry, haha. That was the basis for the punks dead your next song:They're just the fashion now but think they're so different.Fuck em!aint got nothing against punks, used to have a mohawk myself, the day i chopped it off i got called a sell out!

Your first MCD just came out. Why did you choose to release it DIY?
No one else would have us! haha. Me mates band got signed and fucked about abit so it seemed the right thing to do.Skel said he was guna do Cold Hard Truths, we had just recorded demo so did it,Cold Hard Truth got thier 6 track demo on digi pack so buy the fucker!(£5 or 7.50euro) Ours is just a no frills basic 4 track hence the price £2(INC P+P)
3euros(INC P+P),but the songs are fuckin ace! Like I said, we should have a 8 track snazzy digi by the summer so its just a taster.

What is I Want Out Crew?
The I Want Out Crew is a crew... ...wanting out. People are tribal by nature Like any other local scene in Hardcore, we are just a group of mates who want to promote each others bands and put on gigs locally and give each other lifts to gigs out of town. Boston has always had a vibrant punk and hardcore scene and a long legacy of putting on touring bands from all over the world. We dont wanna take anything away from the people who have put on gigs in Boston over the years, they brought some wicked bands here, put them up and fed them, we just thought that there was a bit of a void for the style of hardcore we like, so we sought to fill it. Most of us have been involved in Hardcore and played in bands for a long time, so the I Want Out Crew evolved naturally as a focus for our creative energies, and means to support each other, not just with Hardcore. We see other bands and labels in the UK made up of network of freinds doing the same and forging ahead, and we know that we had enough experience to do the same. "I Want Out" can have a different meaning to each individual, the Daily 9 to 5 grind, breaking out of your surroundings, expectations of your peers, or the shit music bombardment over TV and Radio. It's not exclusive. It also about having a laugh and making an impact. Community, Camaraderie & Choas. (And tailor made footwear) I.W.O.C. Keep an eye on I.W.O Records.

What are the others bands in the crew?
Only Rebel Troops & Cold Hard Truth and affiliation with EHC & Coach Calhoun, honourary brothers! Check them out too!The more the merrier tho. so check out the I Want Out Crew site! www. myspace. com/iwantoutcrew

Craziest shit that happened when you played a gig?
We aint played too many gigs yet,So Promotors get your fingers out of your arseholes! One gig we didnt get chance to play because our bassist got slapped around by the other band! haha! Wont go into that one! One gig we graffiti'd up the back wall of the stage with a IWOC logo, just before we played I want out, stunk the place out to fuck.Best one was the last one we played with CHT and Coach Calhoun, propper crew related fun, just how gigs should be.

What’s your opinion on hardcore bands getting big, signing to major labels etc?
Must always feel good to be a hardcore band playing on a big festival stage to thousands and having constant gigs and tours, would make you feel all your efforts&hard work have been rewarded, although i still think hardcore is one of the most underground scenes going and playing to a huge crowd could never be as much fun as playin a gig stood on the same floor as the crowd getting bashed around while your trying to play your guitar. Those smaller intimate gigs always the best.

The best and the worst in 2008 when it comes to hardcore?
Best: The I.W.O.C supergroup PIT MANEUVER.
Worst: Bands who know promoters getting all the gigs as support, even when they are not in common with the main act.

The best war flick ever is…
Too many so ive edited my own..take the training part of 'full metal jacket' followed by the first twenty mins of ' saving private ryan' centre parts of 'appocalypse now'. I call it 'Full private appocalypse!'

Last Hope - Test Of Time

Last Hope - Test Of Time
Swell Creek/Superhero, 2008

If I had to choose my ten favorite European bands doing the NYHC thing, there’s a big chance it would have to include Last Hope on my list. I love the type of hardcore they play! It’s heavy but they never stray into metal territory. Instead, they keep it fast and aggressive all the time with nice grooves and good song writing.

When it comes to hardcore, for me it’s the feeling that counts. I don’t care if hardcore as a genre is less complex than death metal, jazz or whatever. I love this type of music and it gives me an adrenaline rush every time I hear it. And that’s the deal with Last Hope – they know how to handle their instruments, they know how to write good songs, the production is great, but the most important thing is that these songs really get me moving. I’ve heard about these guys before but not until seeing their video for Under The Flag had the chance to hear their music. Songs on Test Of Time are mainly fast paced, but they like to throw in some slower parts to keep things interesting. They definitely stick to the NYHC vibe in vein of bands like Breakdown or No Turning Back. I can see Test Of Time being a title perfect for everybody who likes it when hardcore bands get heavy but still stick to the rules of the genre. No clean vocals, no Swedish riffs, no death metal influences, just pure hardcore that will make you think of your favorite NYHC acts. I hope they will break through to the wider recognition!

Decades of Blood

Name/Country: We are Decades of Blood from Sweden.

Active since: We have been active since 2007. Due to the tragic death of the former guitarist robin so the band had a break for 6 months in 2007. We started playing again in January 2008!

Special Move: Uhm.. Dont really know. But we are a heavy band from sweden, and there are not many heavey band's from here so! And we put some metal things in our music!

Stuff recorded so far: We have 2 demos recorded. And we have some plans to record more in april/may. So keep your eyes open!

How did you get together?
After our ex-guitarist and best friend Robin died, me and the drummer Måns started to hang out. Then we talked about starting a new band, but it ended up playing with D.O.B again!

Why beatdown?
Cause' its so fucking awesome to play! You meet so much people at gigs, it is a really nice feeling to play! And beatdown is the only right thing! Haha!

The biggest bitches in hardcore are…
Hahaha! I must say our friends in Bitter Taste Of Life. They are a bunch of fuckin' bitches. You got too love those guys!

What part of Sweden you’re from? How is hardcore scene in that area?
We are from the south part of sweden, kristianstad! We dont have a scene here in our town. If you go further south to a town called Lund you'll find some old school shit. If you're going to a good hardcore show, you have to go to örebro, linköping, norrköping or jönköping!

Heaviest band ever?
Hmmm... There are alot of heavy band. But Circle of Death are a really heacy band from germany!

European vs. American Porn?
Haha! European!!! Look at the swedish chicks! DAMN, they are hot!

Fake or naturals?
NATURALS!!! Fake boobs sucks!

Plans for the future?
We are playing at Fire and Ice festival the 24th of january! Then we are going to do some new songs and hopefully record some new stuff in april/may!
