Rise After Defeat - Self Titled

Hailing from Italy, Rise After Defeat brings us their debut album with 10 tracks of metal influenced hardcore. The sticker on the jewel case says this is straight in your face real hardcore so my expectations were high cause that’s exactly the way I like my hardcore – served raw and on point.

Hardcore vibe is present here but they merge it with grooved out metal, more on the thrash side of the game. While most of the songs more or less follow the same pattern, the stand out ones come in the shape of No Fate and Always War. Both are metal influences, but while the first one opens up with a straight up thrash riffing, Always War is more dark and mid paced. Lyrically, their focus is on everyday struggles and the ups and downs of life in Italy. Lyrics are really well written and no matter where you’re from you can relate to a lot of things they’re singing about. This is probably my favorite part of this album.

There is some interesting guitar work in here and Rise After Defeat made sure every track is complex, but what lets this album down is the lack of dynamic in both speed and song writing. The band is at their best when their tempos are quick and in my opinion album should focus on this strength. When they play it straight, it’s all good and even the weak production doesn’t bother me that much. But when they try to branch out and start to do some experimenting stuff, things start to fall off. The problem is when some of the grooves or song’s transitions are poorly executed and instead of keeping things exciting, start to sound boring. The production doesn’t exactly make things any better. It’s flat and even though the band has two guitar players, it doesn’t really sound as powerful as it should.

This isn’t really a bad album overall. It has its share of solid moments and great songs. But mixed in with those songs are some weaker parts and missed ideas. The production doesn't help either. Overall, this album is a pretty decent release, but nothing really above average. There are many things the band need to work on to ensure their next release will rate higher with me.

You guys have just released a video for No Turning Back song . So how do you feel about the whole experience and are you happy with the finished product?

yea it was on short notice and we were running late lionheart and legend met us up around 430 and load in at the show was at 530 so we were really short on time but everything turned out great

Let’s start from the basics for all the kids not familiar with Smash Your Enemies. When and how did the band come to being? What did you expected for the band back then and what lead its creation?

IT STARTED AS A SIDE PROJECT REALLY AND WE DIDNT PLAN ON TAKING IT SERIOUS, THEN WE GOT ADDED ON A SHOW AND WE USED SMASH YOUR ENEMIES AS OUR NAME WHICH IS THE NAME OF A HATEBREED SONG BUT IT WAS ACTUALLY THE BAND NAME WE USED TO PRANK CALL PEOPLE WITH AHAH

And how did you guys personally get involved in hardcore? Is there a particular band or album that got you into it?

EVERYONE GOT INTO IT A DIFF. WAY. FROM METAL AND OR PUNK IT VARIES WITH EACH MEMBER

Being in hardcore band, what's the toughest part of it? What's the biggest wall to get over?

PROBABLY THE NEW SCHOOL KIDS WEARING CUT OFF JEAN SHORTS WHO THINK THEY ARE BETTER THAN EVERYONE ELSE WHEN IT WAS JUST ONE YEAR AGO THEY WERE WEARING THE DEVIL WEARS PRADA T SHIRTS, AND NOW THEY ACT LIKE THOSE KIDS ARE THE WORST THING EVER...IT MAKES ME SICK. YOURE NOT ANY BETTER THAN SOMEONE ELSE BECAUSE OF MUSICAL TASTE.

How would you describe Smash Your Enemies live show? What was the craziest reaction from the crowd you ever got at your show?

VIOLENT. WE HAVE HAD MULTIPLE SHOWS SHUT DOWN AND MULTIPLE PEOPLE SENT TO THE HOSPITAL AND VARIOUS OCCASIONS

How do you see today’s hardcore scene, especially with the media attention it’s been getting lately? Do you ever feel the movement seems to be evolving from a raw and dirty to clean, polished and user friendly?

LIKE I SAID EARLIER THIS WHOLE JEAN SHORT AND FLANNEL FAD IS KILLING IT...WE ALL GO TO SHOWS FOR THE SAME REASON WE NEED TO STICK TOGETHER,

It seems like bands from USA are getting a lot of love here in Europe so I wonder does it work the other way – are there any bands from Europe you guys are feeling and are like ‘damn, I wish they would to come to the States to do some shows’?

BORN FROM PAIN CAME OUT HERE...AND EVERYONE WAS LIKE FUCKKK YEA THE EUROPEAN HATEBREED I LOVE THEM!!! THEN THEY COME PLAY AND 30 KIDS COME OUT...ITS SHITTY I FEEL TERRIBLE ABOUT IT BUT IM GLAD THEY CAME OUT.

Let us know about your debut album which is about to be released in the near future via On The Attack records. Tell us more about that release, what can kids expect to here on there?

ITS CRUSHING. ITS VIOLENT. ITS INTENSE. HIGH ENERGY 100% OF THE TIME.

How did you hook up with On The Attack records and what made you choose that label? Is it because with all the heavy stuff they’ve been releasing, you guys feel like you fit this label musical wise?

I MESSAGED SAM AND TOLD HIM WE NEEDED A LABEL TO PUT OUT OUR STUFF AND HE WAS DOING SIMILAR STUFF AT THE TIME....SO WE WORKED IT OUT. WE ORIGINALLY WERE GOING TO DO AN EP AND RELEASE IT IN MAY BUT HE DIDNT HAVE ANY SPOTS OPEN SO WE HAD TO WAIT UNTIL DECEMEBER, WHICH WORKED OUT BETTER FOR THE BOTH OF US

Chad from the band Legend is dropping guest verses on the No Turning Back song. Are there any other guests on the album?

JOHN AND DAVE FROM TYRANT
LORENZO OF SWORN ENEMY
HEAVY JERRY EX-RECON
PHIL ANSELMO OF PANTERA....HE DOESNT KNOW WE USED A QUOTE OF HIS FROM AN INTERVIEW WHEN HE WAS TALKING ABOUT FAR BEYOND DRIVEN HAHA.

So what are some other bands from Detroit you support and are down with?

TYRANT
HOT ON THE STREETS
LEGEND
MAKE IT CLEAR
WILD AT HEART
HELLMOUTH
H8 INC.

WE TRY TO SUPPORT EVERY BAND WE CAN, WE DONT HAVE PROBLEMS WITH ANYONE AS OF NOW.

So, final question to wrap up the interview: what's your pick for best hardcore release of 2009 so far?

THE NEW HATEBREED
THE NEW TRAPPED UNDER ICE

Thanks for taking your time to do this. Any last shout outs?

SUPPORT YOU LOCAL HARDCORE BANDS, DONT BE AN ELITIST.

Skull Crusher to release debut album in February on Reflections Records

Reflections Records has announced the signing of Skull Crusher (New York). The label will be releasing their debut 12”/MCD, Blinded by Illusion, in February of 2010. You can check two tracks from the upcoming album here.

Band's bio:
A handful of bands throughout the last few decades of 'hard' music have been able to capture that elusive gray area of creative overlap where hardcore, metal, and rock morph into one crushing wall of sound where everything to the listener is somewhat familiar and yet still completely fresh. The list is pretty short, and most people fond of the underground would be able to rattle off at least a few of these heavy hitters. The underlying structures and ideas to this formula aren't anything mind boggling...it's rock-based music after all. But sometimes even the most simple sounds, when played right and through the right gear, can be devastating.

Skull Crusher is an attempt by obsessed fans of hard music to blend their favorite elements of the above. If you took a mixtape (cassette of course) of the Cro-Mags, early Metallica, Danzig, The Icemen, Underdog, Raw Deal, Judge, and Rollins Band, and had to try to form one sound out of them, Skull Crusher wouldn't be too far off.

Maximum Penalty - Life & Times

Ratout - Thick As Thieves

Ratout is a new Boston,UK hatecore band in very early stages bringin the pain! The band has been around just for a while but members have played in other local acts before. This track is one of the first they've recorded and it's done just as it should be done - fast and agressive with some slower parts for some mosh action. Check out their Myspace profile for the rest of their set.

Soul Train

Soul Train is an awesome new band from Massachusetts with some solid groove and rap vibes going on. They've already recorded a demo which you can download somewhere on this site.

Name: Soul Train

Location: Massachusetts

Active since: '09 Baby!

How do you define your overall style?

I would say it's straight forward hardcore, we don't have any bullshit "BR00TAL" breakdowns and we are very DIY. We like to keep a good tempo and just stay on point.

What’s your goal with this band?

As far as goals go we just really want to get our music out there. We already plan on a small week tour in Febuary and a full tour in the summer with the release of our full length. We are slowly establishing connections from state to state.

What do you have recorded so far?

We have our 5 song demo, that was recorded by our buddy Sean Wimer, and we are currently in the process of a full length.

Could you please give us some basic info about the band – Who ? where ? when ? and why?

Soul Train is a four-piece as of right now. Trey on vocals Dremus on Guitar Keith on Bass and me(Jon) on drums.

What do you feel was your biggest accomplishment so far was?

I would have to say our biggest accomplishment yet is the number of shows we are getting booked. We really are tired of this area and have been getting shows elsewhere which is awesome because we love to branch out to a new crowd.

You just dropped your demo so tell the readers what they should expect from it?

Expect a lot, I feel the demo is different from most bands from around the area. It's free for download on our myspace page so be sure to grab it and check it out for yourselves. 5 jams in less then 10 min is how I like to sum it all up.

Who are some of the bands you've been compared to or you feel have had been influenced by?

Some kid dropped a comment on the page saying we reminded him of Trash Talk which is cool. I personally can't say we really have an influence, we are just trying something new and so far we've had a lot of support in what we're doing.

Tell me something about the hardcore scene in Massachusetts? Any good bands over there to check out?

Massachusetts doesn't have that great of a scene, there are so many good bands and venues that don't get half of the attention they deserve and go unnoticed every weekend. As of right now we are branching out into new areas of MA and seeing what they have to offer. Some good bands to check out are Maker (www.myspace.com/thisismaker) they are cool dudes. Also be sure to check out Revenge (www.myspace.com/revengema) a bunch of heathens who bring down the house every show.

How supportive are kids in your area to the bands like yours?

Support comes and it goes in an area like this, we have alot of support from kids all over and we really love it. The more support we get the better it's a good feeling to know others love what you love doing.

So what’s about the beef you’ve got with the Emmure?

There is no beef, what people don't understand about that song is that it was freestyled, Sean pressed Record and me and Dremus jammed that out. It just shows how easy it is to be in a "BROOTAL" band these days. Most of it is generic and outplayed yet kids eat it up, which is garbage.

It seems like hip hop music have a big effect on you. Who are some of the artists from this scene you’re into?

Myself personally my biggest influences are good drummers, one of the first drummers who ever made me really want to drum fast and on point was Jeff from Bad Days. He's an awesome dude who rules at drumming. As far as Hip-Hop goes I like a lot of old school shit like Raekwon, and Big Pun. I'm also into a lot of horrorcore like Jedi Mind Tricks and Necro, I love rap where the artist has a solid flow.
I can't stand the shit that's on the radio where dudes are talking about taking girls to a candy shop and shit. That's fucking whack.

Have you ever played a show with a straight up rap act? Do you think it’s possible in the future?

Never played a show with a straight up rap act, but for the full length I do plan on doing 2-3 whole rap songs that I wrote a while back, hopefully people will be into them if not 'fuck em.

Is there anything you would do different if you could go back through your ‘career’ as a hardcore band?

I wouldn't do much differnt, I'm a real DIY type of guy, I've always just kept it real doing as much as I could for every band I've been in. I've always supported my friends and always backed those who have backed me and my bands and friends.

The year is coming to an end so how has 2009 been for you so far? And who are some of the bands, records, events in hardcore that we will remember this year by?

2009 has been an amazing year for us, we have some good shows coming up and some new places to travel to. some bands that I know I'll remember this year by (despite their genre) are Lions Lions, they have real good music and are all cool dudes. The Kidcrash Trey introduced me to them and I honestly love them. Darasuum, I will always back Gabe in anything he does he's one of the coolest dudes and if always keeping it real. We still have yet to kick it but he's always touring so I'm just waiting for him to come around again so we can grab some sushi. Revenge, love these dudes so much big shout out to them as well. We just can't wait to see what the new year brings.

Anything else you would like to add?

Be on the lookout for our full length this spring or summer. We are gonna put 2 tracks from it up on the page this winter. Merch will be availble in the future we have the money we just need to get it printed. Stay up to date and follow our blogger and twitter all the accounts are on our page. Keep up the support and keep it real!

Norte Cartel Interview

"It's deeper. It's about the music, but it's also about the values. It's about friendship, family, overcoming, self-esteem, staying true to what you are..."
Would you like to introduce the band to the kids who may not have heard of you, as well as a brief history?

Well, Norte Cartel is a no frills hardcore band from Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, dedicated to keep the oldschool torch burning in a respectable way, like it was done back in the 90's when we all got into the whole hardcore thing.

Could you please tell us about your new release called Loyal To Tradition? Why should kids give it a shot?

Loyal To Tradition is our first full lenght album and it has three long years of effort of ours in it. It's probably coming out on January of 2010 in Europe. Kids who like NYHC stuff like Breakdown, SOIA and Madball should really give it a try to get a picture of what's being done regarding latin and oldschool hardcore down here in South America.

Loyal To Tradition -- what does this title mean to you? Is it only about the music, which itself is indeed kept in old school spirit, or does it go deeper than that?

It's deeper. It's about the music, but it's also about the values. It's about friendship, family, overcoming, self-esteem, staying true to what you are... In short terms, it's about being loyal to these values we judge as essentials to hardcore and that perhaps are being neglected by some of the newer kids and newer bands nowadays. This is the tradition we talk about and that we feel everyone involved in hardcore these days should experience and not only hear about from the old jacks.

So what is your label situation? Who is releasing the new album? I've seen the record with the title both in Portuguese and in English so that's why I'm asking -- are there going to be two versions of it?

In fact there is going to be only one version of teh record itself, but it's gonna be released with different artwork. The "Loyal To Tradition" version is gonna be released through XBLDCLOTX Music from Bulgária. And the Portuguese version, "Fiel A` Tradiça~o" will be released by Caustic and Seven Eight Life Records, two of the best hardcore labels in Brazil nowadays.

Could you please give us a run down on your previous albums? What have you released before the Loyal To Tradition?

We only released a split CD with Otra Salida from Argentina in 2008 and a 3-song demo in 2006. We are pretty much a new band and our expectations regarding this first full lenght are very high.

What would you say is your best song, or is that yet to come?

I would guess it is Golpe De Sorte. But that's just my personal taste.

Could you tell us about the Skincore Fest experience? How this whole situation did come about?

In 2009 we are called to play a gig with some hardcore and Oi! bands. The event production told us it was going to be a totally apolitical and non-partisan one. Some time after that a few sites were publishing an e-flyer with the name of a German band on it: "Endstufe". None of us knew this band by that time, but we soon found out they have a song on the album "A Tribute To Ian Stuart And The Glory Of Skrewdriver". Based on this, we immediately got in touch with the event producer and cancelled our participation at this gig. We don't wanna have nothing to do with this kind of stuff and feel that the ideology behind it is absolutely incongruous to our view of hardcore.

So is white power or racist movement big in Brazil? Is it something strong enough to worry about?

I guess it really doesn't matter if it's big or small. Since there's a single person who believes in all the racial superiority crap we should already worry about it. Specially when they try to use our lifestyle and our kind of music to spread their ideas. It's simply unacceptable for the ones trully committed with the HC culture.

"Trends come and go when they are not profitable anymore" -- that's pretty sad but true mate. What do you think is the biggest misconception about hardcore? Do you think that kids who get into the whole thing through the mass media have a correct picture of it?

I would say it is the lack os passion. I mean, we all know that media grabs everything it can and turns it into mass culture. It's sad but true and we can do very little to avoid it. But it really bothers me when the contrary movement takes place. And by that I mean kids copying the so called "mass media hardcore" (if that term is possible) and trying to bring it into the underground. The problem is you can copy the look, you can copy the sound, you can copy the style. But never the passion! You really gotta feel it in your heart! And after some years doing this thing you start recognizing the ones who are in it for the passion and the ones who aren't. Lots of kids nowadays aren't.

You stated that Norte Cartel is strictly apolitical bands at the same standing strongly against nazism, fascism, racism and this type of crap. So what exactly does apolitical mean to you?

Apolitical means that our lyrics don't deal about political stuff. Our lyrics, essencially, talk about the values we judge as beneficial for an ever healthy interaction among individuals (in a way may also be considered as political depending on your concept of politics). Our proposal as a band is this one. Building values and ethics into our scene. Individually, however, all Norte Cartel members are extremely politicized and the posture of standing against this shit transcends the band. It's an obligation we have as citizens, as pieces of a community, and not only as members of a hardcore band.

What's the biggest struggle when running a band in Brazil?

To start it we are far away from Europe and USA, so there's a geographical issue that obstructs a stronger interaction among latin hardcore and these two scenes. The second issue regards the lack of structure and money that affects a so called "third world" country, specially an outcast musical scene such as hardcore. But, little by little, Brazilian scene is evolving. Brazil is a huge country and there is an infinity of great bands here. The scene still lacks a necessary professionalism that many times doesn't happen because of financial issues, but great bands and great labels are really starting to make a difference ang getting things flowing in here.

Is there a unity between hardcore bands and kids in Brazil nowadays? Do you ever play shows with bands that are from a whole different spectrum of hardcore, be it metalcore or crust.

Definitely. Back in the days we had a hardcore scene, a metal scene, a punk scene and a skinhead scene. Nowadays it's most likely that all of theses kids can have fun together in a concert without any trouble. Of course some fights still happen, but come on... We are talking about hardcore gigs, not a monastery. And we play with bands from not only different spectrum of hardcore but also hip hop groups etc. Underground
united!

Ever wonder why there are so few girls at hardcore shows and what do you think we should do to change it?

Because generally hardcore guys are bald sweaty, fat troglodytes full of tattoos dressed in black! But it's a fact, there are few girls at the shows and there should be a lot more. Girls should be encouraged to come along and make our scenes something beautiful and wider. No space for sexism, then.

The year is slowly coming to an end so I can finally start asking this question: what's your type for the best hardcore release of 2009 so far?

I would have to say it is Wisdon In Chains -- Eveything You Know. What a great band!

What are some of the future goals and plans for the band?

Start the promotion of Loyal To Tradition, doing lots of gigs, going to places we never been before and, who knows, perharps an European tour sometime in the future. It would be great!

Thanks for taking your time to do this. Anything else you would like to say to the readers?

Thanks, for eveything, Dloogi & HARDBOILED! Thanx for the kids for taking their time and reading it and hope you guys take a chance and listen to the album Loyal To Tradition by the first month of 2010 if you like oldschool stuff. A preview is here at: www.myspace.com/nortecartel You won't regret it. Peace!

"When my eyes were really open to the corruption of the banks and the families who are in charge and how they set this global scheme up, is absolutely genius on their behalf, there is already to much debt for the world to pay off, so no matter how hard you try you owe money to someone who also owes money to someone and down the line we all owe the bank, and until something is said and done about it we will forever be slaves to these families."

Name: Ryley and Tom, Still Fighting

Location: Outer Space

Active since: Early 2008

How do you define your overall style?

A thrashy nyhc band

What’s your goal with this band?

Bring the winnipeg stomp across the nation

What do you have recorded so far?

Demo

Could you introduce the band and tell us where you’re from? How did the band came together?

We hail from winnipeg, the ass hole of canada. Me and Tom started jamming some hard riffs late 2007 early 2008, with various bros, we recorded some jams and weren't into it. Within some time the band had changes and has now come to find it's right mix and were about to take over the world. Unless of course the grandmasters or some artificial intelligence beats us to it.

Tell us more about your demo, what kids should expect to hear on it?

Some hard riffs, solo's by slash's prodigy, some thrashing head bangers, and politically pissed off vocals.

Lyricalwise, it’s pretty dark and pessimistic outlook on our society and how it gets manipulated by the powers that be. What are some of the issues or events that prompted you to write these lyrics?

We'll blinded i wrote after researching a bit on obama's past and how he came to be where he is, madness is about humanity falling into the path that the illuminate has set for us and no one questions anything they just follow like the rest of the sheep. When my eyes were really open to the corruption of the banks and the families who are in charge and how they set this global scheme up, is absolutely genius on their behalf, there is already to much debt for the world to pay off, so no matter how hard you try you owe money to someone who also owes money to someone and down the line we all owe the bank, and until something is said and done about it we will forever be slaves to these families. The final demo track is denial and that is obviously written about addictions that i had to help and watch a friend deal with.

You guys seem to be inspired heavily by a NYHC scene. What is it about this style that had such an impact on you?

Shit is real. When i got into hardcore that's the shit that hit me first, it's harder than fuck and catchier than a madonna single. You can't deny the NYHC reality!

What are some other bands you guys are into?

bob marley and the wailers, pete rock, krs-one, gangstarr, dead prez, guns 'n' roses, wu-tang (mostly GZA), gravediggaz, madlib, fugees, black sabbath, nirvana, dexter wansel, marvin gaye, billy preston, talking heads, buckshot lefonque, stone temple pilots.

What’s the hardcore like in Canada at the moment? It seems a little overshadowed by the American scene, but you had your share of great bands. Who’s making the biggest noise right now?

Right now hardcore in winnipeg itself is more booming then ever before, (please do yourselves a favor and check out all our homies bands off our myspace) we do got a smaller scene, 50 people is an average show i'd say, but it keeps everything nice a knit together. American hardcore is bumpin' compared to canadian hardcore, it would be cool have that many kids coming like a lot of american shows, but if it's smaller it weeds out the shit heads and you don't need to worry about any bull shit. The biggest noise for the past while are bands like comeback kid, gravemaker, and fucked up. Honorable mentions though to plus minus (montreal) withdrawal (winnipeg) career suicide (toronto) eating glass RIP (toronto.)

What do you think is the main difference between Canada and USA in terms of hardcore? I’m talking both music and kids…

I think the biggest difference is how much bigger hardcore is out in america. A lot more kids get into it but a lot more kids use it as a trend and slowly back out.

If you had any amount of money you could put into a band, what things would you buy in terms of equipment or any other shit (but not strippers) and why?

Personally i would create some from of time travel to visit william cooper, and let him write some of the lyrics for the band. We'd clearly pay off slash to record a few shredding solos for us too.

What are the future plans for the band?

We got a tape in the works for the new year we already got three out of the five written shit will be hard! There is some other dope shit in the works so be on the look out.

Thank you your time. Is there anything else you want to add for our readers?

Keep spreadin the hardcore reality, peace.

Ambush's 'Forward Into Hell' mcd out soon on Rucktion

After succesful Providence and Surge Of Fury cds Rucktion Records are back to deliver some more of the hardest bands in hardcore. We already put an info about Chains Of Hate, now it's a time for Ambush. It's a new UKHC band featuring Scott Special Move on vocals alongside ex members of Taking Names, Eviserate A.D., Awoken and more recently Beat Down Fury. Cd is currently recorded and being prepared for the pressing plant, more news in the future.

"Cold Harsh Reality", debut mcd from Chains of Hate out now on Rucktion Records!

Chains of Hate were formed from the ashes of Twist The Knife (Cardiff Hardcore, Wales). More inspired than before, Speed and Jammo stayed as they were (guitar and bass), Tommy stepped up to vocal duties and good friend Jordan (Elsid) completed the lineup as the new drummer.

As summer '09 approached, Chains Of Hate joined the notorious Rucktion Records family. Their debut album is due as is a stint around Europe with their brothers in True Valiance. No one can stop'em now. Let the games begin....

"Although every song I write lyrics for has its own story and background, you could pretty much boil them all down to one main "hook": a hatred for humanity. Love not your neighbor."

For the people who are reading this and have never heard of you let them know some basic info about the band, like how long have you been together and where you’re from.

Witchunt hails from Tupelo, Mississippi. We started back in January 08 as 4 high school friends playing music, making art, and just having fun with it. Since then, we've had our fair share of member changes and other speed bumps, but I refuse to let this band die. It's not its time...never will be.

It seems like there are two sides to the band – one is hardcore, the other one is more noise and experimental oriented. Where did it come from and is it hard to tie these types of music together?

Well, most of the time, I despise genres and having to label music, especially my own. On the other hand, I'll often argue up and down with people and say "No, you're wrong. This band is this genre, not this other genre." I definitely get pissed when someone says "Dude, Disturbed and Theory of a Deadman are my favorite hardcore bands" or some shit like that. But yeah, I don't really like to give us a label or say we're a certain kind of band. That's why I don't put us under a specific genre on MySpace. In regards to your comment on tying types of music together, I do love noise and experimentation. It's great to always put a little more into your band's sound than people expect because it shows that you're not out to be every other band. You're putting all your inspiration and imagination way past artists that you may like and want to sound like. It's not hard to tie these types of music together at all. Every type of music can easily be strung together if done the right ways. I couldn't be in a strict single-genre band or anything. I have to branch out and pull something from every angle, every view, and every sound (or genre, if you will) into it. It's all about art and creativity for me.

Your Myspace profile doesn’t offer much information about the band. Was it idea from the start to keep the band in the fog of secrecy so the kids focus more on the music than on the band itself?

Yes and no. I mean, it's not like we're trying to keep anything from anyone. There's just nothing that's important about us I guess. I don't know. I prefer being dark and creepy, and keeping information from peers is just another way to maintain that vibe.

So what do you want people to know about Witchunt and your music or message that they may not know?

We make what we want, and we care about what we do. Although every song I write lyrics for has its own story and background, you could pretty much boil them all down to one main "hook": a hatred for humanity. Love not your neighbor.

Speaking about your myspace profile, it just says: “A War is coming. Hunt be the Metamorphosis.” What is the explanation behind it?

We used to be called Head Crime, but after a while it pretty much fell apart. No dedicated members, nothing. So we just called it quits. A couple months passed, and it just ate away at me that the band was no more. I couldn't handle it. This band was the only way to feed/passify my inner demons. I decided to revive the band, which of course called for a new band name: Witchunt.

As of right now, we're looking for a solid line-up again. (That knot should be tied soon though.) The name Witchunt is just kind of a transformation, not an official name. There's a slight story behind the names: It started as a crime (Head Crime), then a hunt (Witchunt); but now, a war is coming...a Holy War.

What are some of the non musical things in the past year that have kept you inspired?

Art of every kind. I like reading mythology of every kind. My horrid imagination pretty much holds the gun of inspiration to my head. My insanity keeps my sane.

I don’t know if you’re gonna agree with me but I definitely sense Holy Terror inspirations in your music. Are you worried that Clevo-influenced hardcore is now becoming cliché? There are a lot of bands that have Holy Terror-inspired songs these days.

Holy Terror is absolutely an inspiration, and it's sad to say, but it is kind of becoming cliche. However, I don't believe it's become too annoying yet. At least it's that sound that's getting recognized a little more instead of some stupid shit, you know? Besides, we're not a strict Clevo hardcore/Holy Terror band. It's just an ingredient. I could spend days trying to explain every single inspiration as far as bands and artists go.

Give us a little bit of an idea on what the people can expect to see in the near future? You’ve got some hard ass songs posted on your myspace profile – what’s happening with that? Is there any label interested in releasing it?

A: Future plans include the obvious upcoming name change, focus on getting set with a steady line-up, and working on tons of new shit. It's pretty safe to say that we'll have some kind of new recordings out in early 2010, and then we'll see what happens. Maybe even some touring is possible. I have a few surprises in store for us to be revealed over time. Don't expect the War to end.

Thanks for your time doing this. Is there anything you want to say to the readers before we finish?

Phantoms

"Even though the lyrics seem dark, they are positive in a way too, its our way of saying, dont be constricted and told how to live your life, its too short to waste away by being someones slave."

Name: Phantoms

Location: Sydney, Australia

Active since: June, 2009

How do you define your overall style?

Life Of Agony - River Runs Red, Prone Mortal Form Intro Riff , and Madball.

What’s your goal with this band?

Want to release a full length and hang out i guess.

What do you have recorded so far?

We have a demo 5 tracks, it sounds pretty weird, but it does the job

When, how and why the band came to being?

We have all been in various sydney bands before, all which have recently broken up, so we thought we'd hang out and write some riffs.

How would you describe your bands personality?

Negative / Nice Guys. haha

It seems your demo is getting a really good response so far. Are you happy with how the things turned out and the reviews you’ve been getting so far?

The band had only jammed twice before we decided to record the demo, and the lyrics were written the night before, so everything was abit rushed. But yeah we are siked that a few people are digging it, apart from us.

The music is great and powerful but I also dig the lyrics. It’s not only well written, but it’s something I can relate to personally and probably the same goes for many kids reading this too. Before you write a song, where do you find inspiration? What's the first thing that comes to your mind?

Im always thinking about growing up, getting older, responsibility's and whats expected of me, so everything involved with growing up process is always on my mind.

The overall tone of the lyrics seems to be very dark and negative. Would you agree with that and is there any running message behind your music?

Even though the lyrics seem dark, they are positive in a way too, its our way of saying, dont be constricted and told how to live your life, its too short to waste away by being someones slave.

I was reading the lyrics for the Villains and it portrays Sydney as a rather not a nice place to be. So how is it growing up and living over there? Is it really so depressive?

Sydney is beautiful, but like every city, it has a side not seen on postcards, living here rules though, nice beaches , good xbox connections, and decent weather, from time to time it can be a weird place, race riots and abit of gang violence but we are really not affected by it

What is the craziest thing that ever happened at one of your shows?

Red Our guitarist playing in his underpants, he isnt a pretty boy either haha

What’s the scene like out there in Sydney at the moment?

The hardcore scene has its ups and downs here,Sydney is struggling a little bit at the moment. Bands like relentless & Shinto Katana have been holding it down for a while and a whole heap of new bands have just started up. Legions are deffinatly going to be a dope band as they get older.

What are some other future plans for Phantoms? When can we expect a full length album?

Full length feb, 12 tracks hopefully release a 7 inch some stage next year also

Shout outs and/or last comments?
You for the interview. sorry it took so long (internetbroke). Check out Legions & Relentles!

Bio:
RHINOCEROS are a Buffalo, NY straight edge band formed in May of 2006 from the ashes of local Buffalo hardcore favorites Infamous and xToThisDayx. They began touring and recording every chance they had for the next 3 years and the results were “Honor Among Thieves” (album), Buffalo (EP) and a split with friends Suicide Pact from Cincinnati, OH. They have crossed the US and back numerous times as well as making trips into Mexico and overseas to Europe and the UK.
2010 will no doubt be the year of the RHINOCEROS with their Eulogy Recordings debut “THEY ARE COMING FOR ME” set to be released in early February. It is a release that will surely open peoples eyes to this band. 12 songs that are heavy, fast and in your face. Each song has the potential to become a dance floor favorite. The album was produced by Jay Zubricky from Buffalo, NY with help from Andy Williams (Every Time I Die). Be on the lookout because RHINOCEROS plan on touring non stop through 2010 beginning with the much anticipated North American “EULOGY TOUR 2010″ in late January to late February 2010.

Pre-order deals are currently available here.

Bio:
KNOCK ‘EM DEAD started early 2005, with drive and passion. We wanted to bring true life back into the heavy music scene. Hamlet and Vladimir joined forces with Gus, Aric and Matt to write a heavy an fast album with a inspirational lyrics. This music is in your face and it’s meant to wake you up and get your life back on track. Also to know there’s pain in this world.
“Endless Struggle” is KNOCK ‘EM DEAD’s long awaited debut album. The album is complete from top to bottom, from the lyrics to the music. We wanted to write something original but keep the Miami flavor. We were really inspired by Sepultura, Slayer, All Out War, 100 Demons, Napalm Death and last but not least Rage Against The Machine. To some people the lyrics will hit right at home, to others the fast and heavy music is something they can relate too. The album is called “ENDLESS STRUGGLE” because we believe will never stop struggling

Hardway signed with Strikedown Records

TRC - London's Greatest Love Story

Blackout Rage - American Straight Edge

When it comes to straight up aggressive straight edge hardcore, you can always expect Seventh Dagger to drop some of the hardest in the game. Blackout Rage is no exception here and even this short EP proves that all the kids out there who are still hungry for raw yet no bullshit hardcore should pay attention.

The band is dead serious and constantly aims to step up their game. Every note is played with maximum strength and every vocal line is spat out with extraordinary aggression. The singer Pauly Edge is touching on a subject of resistance to the corruption and depravity of the modern world, while the rest of the band serves a slick yet rugged soundtrack to his message, well infested with drums that hit hard, and riffs that snap necks. Fitting in between the crushing heaviness of Merauder, and the mosh madness that Throwdown once were famous for, band’s music carries one hell of a punch. They didn’t name the band like that for no reason.

I like the fact that Blackout Rage is not afraid of having an opinion and are open with their beliefs no matter what some scene kids gonna think about it. In an era where it’s common to find bands selling out their integrity or softening their message just to get a record deal or just play shows, Blackout Rage delivers this skinny-jeaned brat that hardcore has become a much needed a kick in the bollocks. In conclusion, along with a heap of killer releases coming out recently from Seventh Dagger, Blackout Rage is most definitely at the top.

This Distance

"We grew older our music got stronger, and then it turned into what you hear today which is This Distance thats about it to be honest, we work hard on what we write and take pride in how we preform and display that music back to a live crowd"

"We grew older our music got stronger, and then it turned into what you hear today which is This Distance thats about it to be honest, we work hard on what we write and take pride in how we preform and display that music back to a live crowd"

When did the band get together and how?

The band started out as a little jam project me and our guitarist matt lyness, back in high school when we were about 12 - 13 years oldand over the years, name changes, multiple member changes ect. We grew older our music got stronger, and then it turned into what you hear today which is This Distance thats about it to be honest, we work hard on what we write and take pride in how we preform and display that music back to a live crowd .

Who are your influences?

Well we take our influences from bands such as It prevails, For the fallen dreams, Taken, Underoath, misery signals its a whole mix of bands and styles

How do you think the scene is doing in England and worldwide?

I’d say its a strong scene seems to set the standards with up coming bands not only uk but to wider areas such as Europe, America all the bands fly over to the uk to check out the scene its pretty crazy.

Have you any shows planned in Middle/Eastern Europe?

Yes we do were planning a Europe tour at the moment with our boys Tides of virtue, were currently hitting up countries such as "poland" "Belgium" "Italy" all dates tba on the myspace @ www.myspace.com/thisdistanceuk

Where do you most like to play live?

We mostly play in england, usually the major cities are where the best venues and most crowds are.

Who would be your favourite band to share a stage with?

We have had the pleasure of supporting "It prevails" on there 2009 uk tour that was a pretty major experience for us we were totally blown away by them and so grateful we had the opportunity to share a stage with them. So i’d say it prevails or for the fallen dreams would be ideal show to play.

What are you working on in the studio at the moment?

We just recently came out of the studio as were recording a single titled "The Dreamer" should be up on our myspace within the next few days hopefully and we should be back into the studio at the mid of 2010 to record our Debut album so be sure to check that out when it drops.

What are your main lyrical influences when you are writing songs/records?

Well scott writes all lyrics so i guess he just writes what he feels and what the music makes him feel, so human emotion what you feel inside.

Do you have any specific rituals for the studio, or just go in and play?

Em... we just basically go in there with the song fresh in our heads from practice and smash it out make a few weeks here and there and boom we have it down dun and dusted, thats basically how it goes for us recording wise, we don’t really like to rush things.

What do you feel has been the high point so far as a band?

Like i said before shareing the stage with such big bands over our time as a band has been a mile stone in its selfsuch as Eternal lord, Your demise, 50 lions(aus), Reign supreme(usa), CDC(usa) It prevails (usa) thats all i can think of at the moment been so many but you get the idea.

Our press campaign for our EP was a good time too we scored 7/10 in rocksound so we were stoked to go to a shop and pick up a mag with our ep inside was so weird seeing our cd there after seeing so many bands before us have there reviews there also.
Touring the uk is always a fun time in the distance camp being away from home showering where ever you can its not much of a goal but we never thought we would end up on the road at all playing back to back we get such a thrill off it we just keep coming back for more.

War Hound

"What we love most about the EP is the amount of energy it portrays. We also wanted to put something out that kids could relate to. We wrote songs that are easy to move to and get involved with."

Band’s name: War Hound

Location: NW Chicago and suburbs

Active since: 2009

How do you define your overall style?
Fun, aggressive, hardcore with powerful lyrics

What’s your goal with this band?
To have fun and to take it as far as we can while doing what we love

What do you have recorded so far?
So far we have recorded a 7 song EP titled "Enemy" as well as a 3 song demo under the name "Gut Rot"

Could you please introduce your band and tell us how did it all start?
Jon does vocals, Alex plays bass, Brody plays guitar and Nico plays drums. Nico and Alex originally started the band with original vocalist Jake (who can be heard on our EP "Enemy"). Brody joined soon after and Jake has recently been replaced by Jon.

Am I wrong or have there been any line-up changes in the band since the recording of the demo?
You are right, We now have a new vocalist, Jon.

Let's discuss your recent ep called Enemy, how would you describe it, music wise?
What we love most about the EP is the amount of energy it portrays. We also wanted to put something out that kids could relate to. We wrote songs that are easy to move to and get involved with.

If you had to pick one song that defines your band the most, which one would that be?
Deadlines, definitely, it was the first song we wrote.

War Hound is pretty aggressive name but when we talked you guys stated that despite the band's name being War Hound, I want to stay away from war imagery’. So, how did the name come about and what is the message you would like to convey to the listeners?
We honestly wanted a name to fit our sound, which to us, is unique. We try to blend multiple styles of the hardcore genre in to our music.

What are some other bands from Chicago you’re down with and would suggest everybody to listen?
Any Given Second (indiana hardcore), Weekend FM (il pop punk), Momentary (il melodic metal), Burdened (il hardcore) and any bands that are on our top friends on myspace.

“In Chicago, things are done differently, hardcore being one of them. Maybe it's the "Midwest Attitude" that seeps into everything that we touch, “ is taken from the Organized Crime Records description of one of their bands. Would you agree with it and how would you describe Chicago scene compared to the rest of the country?
It seems that every show out here gets a pretty good draw which we're happy with.

Could you tell me about what or who got you interested in hardcore in first place?
Alex- I began listening to hardcore music a while ago when I was invited by a friend to a basement show, where I saw a band called Double Crossed (members currently playing in Convicted and Harm's Way). I showed up in my punk gear haha dressed differently then everyone else but I was still accepted and given high fives. This showed me a group of kids and a music scene that I wanted to be a part of. I then started going to more local hardcore shows, one of the best shows i can remember was comback kid, terror, and modern life is war at the clearwater theater. This is were i had my first stage dive during terror, the most aggressiveand uplifting set i've ever seen. I continued my love for these shows and this life style. I moved to Northern California in 2007, Out there i got into bands such as trash talk, sabertooth zombie, ceremony, and pulling teeth, i fell in love with this thrashy sounding hardcore. I moved back to Chicago early 2009 and was inspired to start a thrashy sounding hardcore band.

Nico-The whole idea of a community that is open to different types of people is what turned me on to hardcore music. Some bands that truly convey the message of hardcore to me are trash talk and have heart.

Jon- ive been around the music scene for a while almost 5 years and have discovered many types of music from death metal to punk but hardcore is one of the only types of music that actually stuck out to me the most. i remember watching videos on youtube of terror and that insatntly got me hooked. i think the best band i have ever seen live is terror noone can match there intensity on stage and the message behind them its truly amazing to see how much they live for hardcore its not just music for them its truly a lifestyle. ever since i have discovered the true meaning behind the music i have not given up on it every so often theres a record that will hit home for me and hardcore is the only genre of music that could do that for me.

Brody-Honestly, i am just starting to really get into hardcore. ive always been involved with music and the local scene though. In my junior year of highschool i was introduced to comeback kids wake the dead and further researched what hardcore was all about. i learned that hardcore was more than just music, it was a community. i love the idea of unity and openness of hardcore. it doesnt matter who you are or where you came from or what type of music you listen to. every one is there to support their scence and when your at a show eveyone is equal and no one is left out. thats what drew me into hardcore.

Thanks for taking your time to do this. Any last shout outs or death threats?
Check out our myspace and all the bands on our top!

Reduction keep it evil with the new merch

German mosh warriors from Reduction got some new merch out and I gotta say it looks impressive and no way cliche concerning it's a beatdown. No brass knuckles, no knives and even no bad language. Instead, you can choose between themes of apocalypse, medieval witch hunt or Mexican day of the dead which is for some reason called The Gypsy Rage. More designs after the break...

Here are the new tees from the band:

Rescue Ink. Tough guys with big hearts

"Rescue Ink," is a new Nat Geo's reality series portraying the bunch of thugs and knuckleheads on their quest to save abused animals in NYC area. They are "seeking redemption and solace in their mission to save animals from human abuse." The group got together when they read a story about some idiot who tied a dog to a tree and set it on fire. They decided that this type of shit won't happen in their neighborhood no more. As Joe Panz told "Good Morning America, "Right then and there we decided we were not going to let this happen again with anyone doing something about it."

RESCUE INK is a rescue group unlike any you’ve seen before: a bunch of tattooed, motorcycle-riding tough guys who have joined together to fight animal cruelty, educate abusers and help resolve situations other rescue groups can’t – or won’t – handle themselves.

Some of the guys grew up in the projects, some had their brushes with the law, some used their smarts to survive, even thrive on the streets. But that was then, this is now, and today they all share a common goal: Using every means within the thin boundaries of the law, they persuade and educate abusers about the right way to treat animals.

Like many of the animals they save, the members of Rescue Ink know what it’s like to be given a second chance in life. And they’re using theirs to help the animals, no matter what it takes.
