Doug Weber left Terror

Terror officially parted ways with their long time guitarist, Doug Weber. Position has been already filled with Jordan Posner, formerly of No Warning. In Scott Vogel's words:

"[Doug] pretty much said he was sick of living in a van 90% of each year and that he wanted to live a more normal life. We can't really blame him for that decision as there are times when I hate this shit too. It's a real wake up call for anyone that thinks touring is ALL fun or that Terror as a band has it easy in any way. I honestly thought that Doug leaving may have been the end for us. Doug had been in the band for a very long time and I was starting to feel that all the line-up changes might start to make us look like a joke, but Nick and Martin sternly told me that this is NOT the end and that we have a lot more to accomplish. So, we pushed on as always. The only person we had even really talked about or spoke to about stepping up to fill the Big Man's shoes was our friend Jordan from the now defunct Toronto HC band No Warning. For anyone that knows me or has read interviews with me you'll know that I love No Warning and really all of Terror does. Jordan has proved to be an amazing song writer and dude so we are excited about this change. We're going to do some touring with him to make sure he can handle our insanity and he'll be the new guitarist if all fits how we think it will."

Live by the fist/Tiempos de Honor - Split CD

Live by the fist/Tiempos de Honor - Split CD
xCausticx/Seven Eight Life 2008

Both bands come from South America and both represent political and social aware side of hardcore. Live By The Fist from Brazil sets it off with 4 intense and punishing tracks. You can hear they are really committed to get their point across. I heard some people comparing them to Path Of Resistance but I can’t totally agree.

They had three people doing vocals on their previous record and it was the main reason for that, but now (according to the booklet) the only official singer left is Sandro. Ok, they still use multiple vocal approach but apart from that, I can’t find any other significant similarities. I think heavy old school hardcore with a strong punk feeling are the best words to describe what’s offered here. They keep it fast with lots of shouting vocals, sharp riffs and tight drumming. Lyrically they speak out about injustice of today’s world, consumerism and general state of our society. These 4 songs are a good follow up to their debut CD, No End In Sight. There’s no letting up when Tiempos De Honor takes over. They sound a little bit heavier and more metal than punk, , but the general feeling is the same. Compared to Live By The Fist , they more often make use of mid tempos and there are some really powerful breakdowns now and then. Also, the riffing is more metallic with a slight Slayerish feeling. The vocals are mainly shouted which is not my favorite style of singing and in this case doesn’t work for me. In my opinion, they should have tuned them down in the mix cause they drown out the music a bit. Apart from that, this CD contains some good hardcore tracks that will make you want to get into the moshpit and throw some punches!

„Respect through Fear“ Tour with Unit 731 (USA) & Fallbrawl (Ger)

PERIOD: First 2 Weeks of May

If you’re interested in booking these bands, mail your offers to info@17stitches.com

UNIT 731 (USA)
UNIT 731 formed in late 2005 by friends in Pittsburgh Pennsylvania. The band's beatdown hardcore sound stays true to the PA hardcore legends they grew up listening to, such as Built Upon Frustration and No Retreat. Other influences like Sworn Vengeance, All Out War, and Merauder have helped the band form a unique identity. The release of the 2006 Demo sparked interest from all over the world, especially Europe. In December 2007 Germany's Filled With Hate Records released UNIT 731's debut full length "A Plague Upon Humanity". The band has maintained solid core members for their entire existence and continues to carve their own niche in heavy hardcore, both lyrically and musically.

FALLBRAWL (GERMANY)
Fallbrawl came to life in 2005 and pretty fast made sure that they were not just another 'we'll be around for a few months'-cliché band. Shows came in pretty fast and the name became known, spawning both lovers and haters in the scene. After countless shows and even more lineup changes (at least it feels like this) Fallbrawl finally found their first real solid lineup in late 2007 with Paddey and Stefan on Guitar, Peer on Drums, Holzi on Bass and Dave on Vocals and then wasted no time. The outcome is called "Cold World".
A nine song monster of modern beatdown-influenced hardcore that takes no prisoners. they manage to mix different styles in a non-boring way, filled with massive gangvocals and bonecracking breakdowns and moshparts. Berlin-based label WARCITY RECORDS handled the european release in June 2008 while ON THE ATTACK RECORDS took care of the American release (which young hardcoreband nowadays does achieve that with their first record?) In celebration of the US-Release, the band went over the pond to play 5 Eastcoast shows with bands like Wisdom in Chains, Hoods, Full Blown Chaos, Homicidal and others and drank about 5000 gallons of beer in ten days.
After another reacent lineup change fallbrawl is joined by long-time friend Andree (also in germany's Circle of Death) on Vocals and are now teaming up with Pennsylvanias UNIT 731 (Filled with hate Records) for a two week European Tour in May.

South Impact - Codex

South Impact - Codex
Deadlight Entertainment, 2008

South Impact is a French band that play style which can be best described as old school hardcore with a strong touch of metal. Their music has a lot of energy & anger pouring out of it. Songs are heavy and fast with nice groove parts and some breakdowns now and then.

Musically South Impact displays a variety of approaches to the genre. Some of the guitar tunes come close to metalcore and thrash and there’s definitely much more going on here in the riffing department that on your average NYHC record. If I had to compare them to someone, think of mixture of in your face attitude of Madball with the intensity of Terror and thrash influences of Sworn Enemy. At the same time, names like Fat Society (their singer does guest appearance here) or Kickback pop to my mind while listening to this. The majority of the material is fast paced, but they aren’t afraid to slow things a little to give the songs more complexity. The production is top notch, giving it heavy sounds that is clear but not over polished. Apart from Bastard and Remy, both known from Fat Society, other guests on this CD include guys from Alea Jacta Est and Another Bleeding Season. This is solid record from a band that definitely deserves more attention!

Relentless - Opposition To Control

Relentless - Opposition To Control
Dogfight Records 2008

This is a short record so there will be no beating around the bush. Clocking in 11+ minutes, Opposition To Control by Relentless delivers a good dose of modern hardcore in vein of Terror, Since The Flood or Death Before Dishonor with mosh oriented approach and heavy sound.

Solid songwriting backed up with tight execution make it a record for everybody into this kind of stuff. Their vocal Trent did a good job on this one. His rough voice works well with the style they embrace. Talking about their lyrical delivery, their songs deal with topics like racism, leeches, gaining control of your life and having to deal with everyday bullshit. Even if it sounds cliché at first, lyrics are quite cleverly written and serve not only as an addition to the music. At first, somehow I got the impression this album could have been a better. Maybe it was me just being greedy, but I couldn’t fight the feeling they could have poured more energy into their music. But after few spins this CD really grew on me. Still, it’s not over the top, yet I’ve been listening to this record plenty times in a row and it didn’t get boring at all. They’re definitely going in the right direction and I can’t wait to hear more from them!

Deeper Than Blood

Name: Deeper Than Blood

Location: Reno, Nevada

Active since: January 2008

Special Move: Breakdowns

Who is who in the band?
Stephen Watson:Vocals, Jordan Murikrami:vocals, Ryan Baden:Guitar, Joe Weaver:Bass, Jake Martin:drums

How did it start?
Me(Jake), Ryan, and Stephen wanted to start just a regular Hardcore Band, but once we started writing our first song(Blood Oath) we realized we were best at writing Beatdown, then from then on all we write is Beatdown.

What’s your main goal with the band?
To get the message across to people to never ever let anybody walk all over them, this music is for the little fish in the pond to fight back and fuck up anybody that doesn't believe in them.

You guys seem to play a lot of gigs. What was your best and worst show so far?
Our Most fun shows are at small venues with no stages, the energy is way better. Our worst would have to be when we played at this huge venue with a bunch of lights and stuff, it might of looked cool, but it was not that much fun at all.

Do you feel like Nevada is playing their part in hardcore right now?
Yes Nevada is playing more than there part, the Reno Scene is like a big family, we would kill for one another.

Best gangster movie of all time?
Blood In Blood Out haha!

East Coast vs. West Coast?
West Coast Hardcore is where it’s at!

Positive vs. negative hardcore?
We do like posi hardcore but we would prefer Negative Hardcore because the message in Negative Hardcore Gets to you in a stronger and more intense way.

Any last comments?
Thank you so much for this interview! Hopefully we will see all of you one day playing in your city!

Shinto Katana - Cold Streets

Shinto Katana - Cold Streets
Dogfight Records 2008

For those who don’t know, Shinto Katana is a Japanese sword, deadly sharp embodiment of the samurai spirit and courage. Listening to Cold Streets I can believe the band live up to their name. If you like dark and heavy side of hardcore, read on!.

Cold Streets begins with slow, moshy intro with heavy guitar work and a good dose of double bass that will make you prepared for what you are going to experience during the following 8 tracks on this CD. This album has a metallic feel to it, but they still keep it true to the hardcore genre and have plenty of energy and vitality behind them. Shinto Katana made sure their music is filled with heavy and catchy riffs backed by pounding rhythm section. Even thought it’s nothing revolutionary, they surely know how to write good songs. The production is great, the musicianship is excellent and the song writing is flawless. I must give them props for keeping this album intense, but still diversified with lots of hooklines and creative riffing. The tempo is mainly mid-paced but they do speed up things a little from time to time. Thanks to aggressive vocals and really good musicianship album managed to keep my attention for quite long. Overall feeling of this album is cold and dark, created both musically and lyrically. Songs deal mainly with personal stuff, like protecting your neck in this world full of hate and betrayal or fucked up relations with other people. Damn, what would you expect from an album titled Cold Streets? You can tell that the band put a lot of effort in this album and it was worth it.

PS. Did I mention really good rap outro? Keeping in mind all the whack rap songs made by hardcore artists, this one really does hold it’s own.

Blood Stands Still - Salvation Through Struggle

Blood Stands Still - Salvation Through Struggle
Mediaskare 2008

Blood Stands Still is one of the bands I had to see playing live to start to really appreciate. Their set in Warsaw was one of the most intense and energy filled live shows I’ve seen last year and after that, I knew I gotta check this new record out. Musically, they’re still staying true to the sound they developed on their previous releases, but if you ask me, it’s with no doubt their best record so far.

Basically, everything here has been taken to the higher level – tracks are more aggressive, production is heavier and more powerful and song writing is tight and fluid as never. They still like to throw in some metal influences but the old school vibe is still present. It sounds mature and modern, but without sacrificing intensity and vitality, things we’re all here for. This is first rate hardcore with some wicked riffs and intense drumming. Bands like Terror or Since The Flood pop through my head while listening to this, but even if there are many similarities, Blood Stands Still have their own unique style and are easily recognizable. Make no mistake, they have delivered one of the strongest missives from the American hardcore scene in 2008. Blood Stands Still will leave you bleeding, kid!

Enemy Ground - In Memory Of Them All

Enemy Ground - In Memory Of Them All
Gangstyle, 2007

Enemy Ground’s second full length brings nothing new to their sound. They still walk the path paved by bands like Merauder or Born From Pain. Especially the second one comes to my mind when I listen to some of the tracks on this CD –same heaviness, mid tempos, mosh parts. Even the vocals sound much alike. I know some people might not like it, I don’t care.

I guess signing to GSR really works for them. Enemy Ground not only made a big progress when it comes to handling their instruments and writing good music, but the production of this record and cover artwork is top notch. Their sound is very clean, you can hear each instrument clearly and distinctly. Most of all, they finally sound as heavy as they should. It comes as no surprise when you consider the production duties were handled by Jacob Bredahl (he’s also doing guest appearance in one of the songs). My only gripe with the album is that sometimes it lacks energy and intensity, at least not in the amount you would expect from a hardcore release. You know, this thing in music that makes your flesh creep and you just wanna get lost in the art of mosh, mayhem and destruction. Enemy Ground tries, but never really delivers enough emotions to make you feel like this. This album is filled with groovy riffs and intense drumming but after few spins all the song begin to sound the same. Most of the tracks are treading the familiar ground and they really should work on making their songs more diversified. When it comes to vocals, you get typical hardcore edgy and harsh with occasional growling now and then. Nothing I’ve never heard before, but still works for me. This album is just a solid release, but nothing above average. They know how to deliver some quality songs but they need to add more vitality to their sound.

Enemy Ground

Stigma - New York Blood

Face Your Enemy

With their uncompromising lyrics and hard headed approach, Face Your Enemy brings some South Italian mindset to the table. Hardcore they deliver will surely please all the fans of the NYHC/ beatdown style with anthems about everyday struggle, making ends meet and sticking to your beliefs. Check out what they had to say about their music, local hardcore scene and life in Italy in general.

Could you describe your band to everyone who doesn’t know FYE? How did you guys started? Were you all friends when you decided to form a band?

The FACE YOUR ENEMY clan was born in 2004 from Ray (drums), Dome (voice and guitar) and Ciro (bass) under the name Ashamed. The first sound of them was a little bit "crust" mixed with ny hc style and some mosh riffs. After some time, Gigi (guitar) and Gianni (guitar) joined the band. With these new entries, the band had this line-up: Dome (voice), Ray (drums), Ciro (bass), Gigi (guitar) and Gianni (guitar).
The consequences: the change of the sound, that become heavier and faster. Then Gianni had to go and I, Marco, have taken his place since 2006.

How would you describe the style FYE plays? What are your main musical influences?

We play ny hc with mosh influences and beatdown style with a little bit of rap. We like and listen many bands, but the main influences are: Madball, Hatebreed, 25 Ta Life, Terror, Death Before Dishonor, Sworn Enemy, Agnostic Front, Knuckledust, Sick Of It All, First Blood, Figure Four, Furious Styles, Hoods, Merauder, Angel Crew, Proudz, x Nueva Etica x, Shattered Realm, Slayer, Six ft. Ditch, Since The Flood, Out To Win, Throwdown, Walls Of Jericho, Necro, Busta Rhymes and many many more.

What did you guys released so far?

Under the name of Ashamed, there's a demo called "No respect"; on the other hand, FyE released a mini-cd called "By force in your face", with six tracks, out from the beginning of this year on Hate Unit and Relief Records.

What is south Italian attitude? How much south and north of Italy differs from one another?

I think that the attitude is different: in the south, people struggle everyday to survive, there's more poverty and what we say in the lyrics is what we really feel, the reality of things. It's not only hardcore: it's life, which here in the south grows heavier everyday.

Is tough guy style popular in Italy? Most Italian bands I know play positive hardcore or metal core with vegan/political/SxE attitude. Are there many bands playing beatdown/nyhc type of shit?

There aren't many bands that play this style, but the bands that do it are pretty good. The most important for us are Straight Opposition, Concrete Block, To Kill, To Ed Gein, Watch Your Step.

Many of your lyrics deal with everyday struggle and harshness of life. Is living in Italy so hard?

It's difficult to live here, because most of our lives are controlled by criminal organizations, corruption and hypocrisy. That fact is that that type of mentality is instilled in everyone, but not in us. We hate that kind of shit, we hate lying, we hate criminal organizations. Life is a precious thing: it belongs to us. We are respectful with everyone. If you give us respect, we will respect you: if you try to fuck us, then, don't know what will happen.

I just picked two song-texts where i have some questions... Could you please explain the message behind " No Pain, No Regrets" and “Get Your Life“?

"No pain, no regrets" was written by me the last year. I wrote the song thinking about all the guys who hide themselves behind a mask, afraid of life, afraid to try, stuck between the past mistakes. It's not a hate song, it's an advice to stand the fucking up and try, seek your inner truth and live free.
"Get your life" is quite similar. It's an advice to take your life seriously, to try to become something, to do what you like. No matter what people say, no matter what people think. They want you to fail, but you've to find the strength inside and go on.

What bands would you like to share a stage with?

The bands that I've mentioned before.

Are you guys planning to do any international tour?

We would like to plan an European tour, considering the fact that we've played in many places here in Italy.

What are you listening to lately, and are there any recent records that have really impressed you?

Well, lately it has been a little bit poor, musically. We listen the old and some new stuff of all the bands that I've mentioned before.

How does typical FYE show look like?

Strength, energy, positivity, anger, fury, ny hc, beatdown and rap style.

What are the best hardcore bands coming from Italy?

Straight Opposition from Pescara, To Kill from Rome, Strength Approach from Rome, Concrete Block from Turin. There are also other good realities, like Countdown Records that produces hc and rap bands.

Is Italian hardcore scene divided? Do bands like yours and for example vegan/sXe or posi old school bands all stick together and support one another?

Here the scene is quite good. We respect each other and don't give a fuck about the fact that you're straight edge, vegan, of if you eat meat and get drunk. We respect everyone. Obviously, there are also bands of assholes who follow the trends and criticize you inside the scene. Fuck that, man.

Is cosa nostra still strong and active? Is it an organization people are still afraid of? Are you part of it? (Easy man, I won’t snitch!)

Well, of course it is still strong. Cosa Nostra (or Mafia) is active in Sicily, Camorra in Naples, where we live, and 'Ndragheta in Calabria. It makes me sad to think about it, but people still fear this shit. In the past, some members of FyE had relationship with people involved in "that system", but only to get respect. You gotta learn to give and take it when you live on the streets.

What hardcore means to you?

Hardcore isn't just a sound. Hardcore means respect, be true to yourself and fighting the obstacles of life with strength and perseverance, with humility and awareness.

What’s your opinion on emo?

We don't share that kind of attitude, but people are free to do what they like. Personally, I would never play that kind of stuff.

I’ve seen a photos of you guys playing at some kind of hardcore street party. What’s the story behind it? Are there many hardcore open air parties like these in Italy?

No, no. It was a case. It's not usual here. Usually we play in clubs.

What do you guys know about Polish hardcore and Poland in general?

Well, I don't know a lot of it. I think that is quite poor, considering the fact that a lot of polish try to find to find work possibilities outside their country. Musically, I know the Good Old Days, a good fucking old-school hardcore polish band that I saw the last year live in London, when I was on vacation, in July. They really rock hard. Check them.

Any last comments?

Thank u for the questions. They are pretty good.

No Love Lost - Unleash The Shackled

No Love Lost - Unleash The Shackled
Dogfight Records, 2008

Until I’ve Heard Unleash The Shackled by No Love Lost I never really thought that life in Australia can be that stressful. Themes of anger and frustration are present in every song on this album and I bet that if you listen to this record, you’ll be more cautious about some stuff that is happening around.

From the movie samples they used and type of music they play I expected some typical macho tuff guy style which is not bad in the end, but many times tends to get boring and there is nothing more funny than a guy half my size singing about smacking people up and taking respect. That’s not the deal here. Instead, lyrics deal with serious stuff like domestic violence, increasing brutality of today’s youth, war, terrorism, our government’s selfishness and helping each other out in hard times we’re facing today. I like it when a band can touch important topics without being cliché about it. Strong message they deliver is backed up by powerful voice of the lead singer, Pilks. You can really sense tension and commitment when he’s singing. Combine it with tons of mosh parts, thrashy riffs and a little bit of speed, and you’ll get a perfect hardcore release. They draw influences from bands like Merauder or 100 Demons but add some Clevo flavor to their sound. The intensity never really lets up throughout the album and they put a lot of effort to make it sound both groovy and brutal. Overall, a solid disc a little more on metallic side of hardcore but without sacrificing intensity and energy of the genre.

Straight Opposition - Gathered Against Mediocracy

Straight Opposition - Gathered Against Mediocracy
Indelirium , 2008

Straight Opposition’s previous release left me with mixed feelings. It was a proper record played with all respect to hardcore standards of today, but after few listens tended to get boring and didn’t manage to keep my attention for long. So it was with some skepticism that I pressed play on their new mini album. I don’t know if it’s the rawer production or just more in your face attitude, but this is way better than Step By Step album.

Since the opening track you can sense the progress they made since the previous record. Their sound is much heavier, songs are faster and vocals meaner. While Step By Step makes me think of New York bands like Sick Of It All, this new CD introduces intense and sinister atmosphere of early Clevo scene to their sound. It can be heard on tracks like Critical Reason vs. Little Italy or Lick The Boss’s Ass. Incorporating metal elements definitely work in their favor.
By keeping their songs tight and intense, Straight Opposition is reaching hardcore heights and proves to be a force to reckon with. Being more compact (clocking in only 12 minutes), it makes you hit play again and again without getting boring at all. Lyrically, they’re rooted deep in left wing state of mind, with songs on working class life, being anti fascist and Palestine-Israel conflict. I can agree with most of the stuff they sing about, even though I’m not down with hammer and sickle symbol at all. To sum it up, it’s definitely worth checking if you like when bands go raw, fast and heavy without sacrificing quality.
